COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Abbaye des Rocs (9% alcohol vol.) is a pure malt beer, with no added sugar. The entire range of tastes is directly linked to the double fermentation, the precise quantities of malts (7 types) as well as the mixtures of three kinds of hops (Belgian, German and Czech). Its colour is a striking deep and majestic red. Its taste is rich and full of subtlety. It is tasted like a red wine with which it shares the ruby colour without having the tannin. It develops a strong sweet smell. It confirms the initial impression in the first mouthful, with a sharp body that is balanced with a certain fruitiness. It frees itself on the palate and develops an impressive depth of taste. Some traces of burnt wood are detectable, but never scorched even if it contains this kind of malt. The foretaste is very prolonged because of its rich and unctuous development throughout the mouth. The bitter and sugar tendencies (even though there is no sugar in its composition) compete and come back together to the taster's great satisfaction. It is a deep, mystic and extremely mature beer to be classed among the great products of our soil.

Well, I have to kick myself a few times for making a rookie mistake. I’ve tried to not let the numbers reflect the fact that a bad pour sent the yeast into suspension, causing a chunky mess to be poured, even in the first glass. My problem was due to the relatively long neck and my one-handed pour while holding my snifter-type glass in the other hand. This caused a bit too much forward lean on the bottle and a resultant glug-glug of air trying to get out of the too-full neck. The turbulence made for a messy beer. Nonetheless, this bottle obviously had a huge amount of sediment. Beyond that, my bottle was obviously past its prime, fairly vinous and oxidized. Despite this, there were some great caramel flavors, sweet toffee-like chewiness, a great, light-tan head, and other enjoyable qualities. Too bad I only had one bottle!

Bottle from Deconinck, Vichte - FR. Color: deep dark brown beer near to black no carbonation and medium ivory brown head. Smell: roasted malt, caramel, toffee and alcohol with soy sauce notes. Taste: full body with amazing complexity. Superb taste. Good palate. Caramel and toffee well balanced with incredible belgian yeast notes. Coffee and some chocolate finish notes. Aftertaste: roasted malt, caramel and toffee. Small coffee notes. Alcohol but really not present. Quiet drinkable for 9 ABV. Amazing, I’m in love!

Bottle erupted. A few other reviews mentioned it happening to them as well so be ready if yours does the same. Light brown with minimal head. Bubbily sweet raisin flavor first swig. Aroma vaguely like that of red wine. Malty and roasted nuts, though both are subtle. Same can be said about the red wine character. Extremely subtle beer, what’s all the fuss about? I let it warm a bit and the flavor opens up some more. Finish longer and more enjoyable still not a very tasty one for me. Not bad in any regard, though hugely overrated.

Bottle L151107341 bff 29/05/2017. Extreme gusher. Red-brown color with direct vanishing extreme foam mass. Aroma of sweet malt, soy sauce and sugar candy. Taste is less sweet as the aroma suggests. Caramel, dark fruit and a little wine-like.
