4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: FEB 26, 2005 (Re-rate, 0.33l bottle) Very nice, deep, dark red color with a large head and lots of big yeast particles on the bottom. Extremely malty, sweetish and toffeeish, raisiny, rye-pudding aroma, even sweet-imperial-stoutish and port-wineous. The flavor is extremely malty, sweetish, almond-liqueourish, quite bitter-hoppy. Port-wineous, liqueourish - but pleasantly so, full of rye-pudding and spices (orange peel, licorice, etc.), plus a hefty fruitiness. The palate is quite full-bodied, warming, somewhat foamy-carbonated and sweet - but bitter. Some alcohol can be felt, but it’s definitely not dominating the flavor. An excellent, full-bodied, yeasty, very malty and tasty brew. Succeeds nicely in combining scotch ale, abbey dubbel and imperial stout. This must be the brew to die for, if well aged!
(0,75l bottle, was 6-4-7-4-14=3.5) Nice, murky, dark amber color with medium head. Sour, slightly sweet aroma. Quite alcoholic, sweetish flavor. Soft and full-bodied palate. A good brew for/with dessert, but a slight disappointment considering what I had read from others.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
AROMA : caramel, bread, cereal, toast, roasty, plum, raisin (grilled, then in the aftertaste fresh), cooked apples, bubblegum, banana, butterscotch, woody, spicy, complex.
APPEARANCE red, brown body, bit hazy, frothy, white foam with outstanding tenue. TASTE : heavy cloying sweetness, lightly bitter, bit salty. PALATE :full body, creamy, average carbonation, long sweet finish with fuzziness. OVERALL a great strong ale like no others, leaves nice long aftertaste no so overwhelming as the taste/aroma itself. Bottle from fridge, champaign glass.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle at home in London - sourced in a trade. Pours clear chestnut brown with a lot of sediment with a creamy beige head that calms down faster than I expected it would. Great aroma, lots of semi-dark fruits, raisins, caramel, rich bread, some Belgian yeast, candi sugar. Big sweet flavor with scoops of caramel and toffee, lots of ripe fruits, berries, some toasted grains and bread, very mild earthy bitterness. Medium to full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Only mild warmth in the finish, some further toffee character, dark bready malts, some esters, fruitcake, bread, toasted sugar, caramel. Delicious stuff. Quintessential.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
My sample had many yeast floaties. Not sure this is typical. Colour is dark amber. Average head. Aroma are all about dry fruits. Sweet but sufficiently dry. Very well balanced. Reminds me of st bernardus abt.

Sehr gutes Bier!

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle from Dranken Verheyen in Poppel. The beer is dark ruby red colored and pours a large cream colored head, with average carbonation. The aroma is rich palate of sweet and bitter tones, like raisins, caramel and dark fruits but also hops and spices. The taste is smooth and full and is medium sweet and fruity, which ends in a well balanced bitterness with some spices and the 3 hops are just a little noticable. The finish is long, complex and is pleasantly bitter.

Hazy dark copper body with large, frothy, tan head, mostly lasting with some nice lacing.
Moderate-to-heavy malty (caramel) and light hoppy (citrus, flowers) aroma with notes of red fruits, spices, alcohol; very light feeling of medicine.
Moderate sweet flavour with light acidic note.
Medium body with watery-to-oily texture; soft carbonation; light alcoholic warming in the finish.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle. Darkest red, cola pour. Modest but lasting head with little lacing. Sweetness in the aroma is noticeable from across the table. It is lovely blend, robust, characteristic. Yet, it is difficult to pinpoint the fragrances. Dark chocolate, prune, light hairspray booziness, rye, faint hint of ripened soft cheese, hint of chickpeas, fresh grass notes. Near perfect amalgam. Taste starts sweet and salty, mostly salmiakki. First sip really hits the palate hard. Saltiness abates quickly, and in subsequent tastes the sweetness comes through: chocolate, bubblegum, faint hint of red wine, hint of coffee/espresso. Again: near perfect mix, very nicely balanced, robust. Aftertaste is slightly sticky, dry. Very nice.
