Abbaye des Rocs (9% alcohol vol.) is a pure malt beer, with no added sugar. The entire range of tastes is directly linked to the double fermentation, the precise quantities of malts (7 types) as well as the mixtures of three kinds of hops (Belgian, German and Czech). Its colour is a striking deep and majestic red. Its taste is rich and full of subtlety. It is tasted like a red wine with which it shares the ruby colour without having the tannin. It develops a strong sweet smell. It confirms the initial impression in the first mouthful, with a sharp body that is balanced with a certain fruitiness. It frees itself on the palate and develops an impressive depth of taste. Some traces of burnt wood are detectable, but never scorched even if it contains this kind of malt. The foretaste is very prolonged because of its rich and unctuous development throughout the mouth. The bitter and sugar tendencies (even though there is no sugar in its composition) compete and come back together to the taster's great satisfaction. It is a deep, mystic and extremely mature beer to be classed among the great products of our soil.

UPDATED: FEB 26, 2005 (Re-rate, 0.33l bottle) Very nice, deep, dark red color with a large head and lots of big yeast particles on the bottom. Extremely malty, sweetish and toffeeish, raisiny, rye-pudding aroma, even sweet-imperial-stoutish and port-wineous. The flavor is extremely malty, sweetish, almond-liqueourish, quite bitter-hoppy. Port-wineous, liqueourish - but pleasantly so, full of rye-pudding and spices (orange peel, licorice, etc.), plus a hefty fruitiness. The palate is quite full-bodied, warming, somewhat foamy-carbonated and sweet - but bitter. Some alcohol can be felt, but it’s definitely not dominating the flavor. An excellent, full-bodied, yeasty, very malty and tasty brew. Succeeds nicely in combining scotch ale, abbey dubbel and imperial stout. This must be the brew to die for, if well aged! (0,75l bottle, was 6-4-7-4-14=3.5) Nice, murky, dark amber color with medium head. Sour, slightly sweet aroma. Quite alcoholic, sweetish flavor. Soft and full-bodied palate. A good brew for/with dessert, but a slight disappointment considering what I had read from others.

Smaak is goed.

Hazy, dark red brown with thick light beige head. Aroma has spicy yeast, fruit, caramel, perhaps some chocolate and light alcohol whiffs. Quite complex. Flavour has sweet caramel and dried fruit, prunes and figs. Warming alcohol and nice bittersweet finish. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Good. Really good...

UPDATED: JUN 22, 2015 fles gekocht via firmabier.nl, uitgeschonken in Gouden Carolus bokaal.

Pours a rich ruby brown colour, heavy sediment (as in chunks of yeast being poured however this is most likely due to my poor pouring technique!) and small tan head. Aroma is figs and dried fruits, slight spice, sweet malt, and doughy yeast. Taste is malty sweet and nicely balanced bitter, complex and enjoyable. Smooth feeling in the mouth and the alcohol is well masked. Very good indeed!

Bottle. The looks is probably the weakest element - cloudy reddish brown with unstable beige head. From there it goes only uphill. Complex aroma, banana, bread, chocolate cookies, hints of anise, mint. Taste in line; sweet and spicy, long malty finish containing all of the above. Great beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

330cc bottle. Pours reddish brown. Really sweet. Great complexity of flavors and aromas: earth, spice, yeast, malt, bread, caramel, fruiits, nuts. Some bitterness. Highly drinkable for. 9abv 100% grain. Oustanding.

Hazy brown colour, big white head. Aroma of dried fruits, bread, caramel, yeast, hops. Dry sweet taste, lightly bitter finish and a bit spicy aftertaste. Medium body and average carbonation. Nice fruity Belgian ale.
