Silphium (2117), Haslett, Michigan, USA Aug 9, 2005 Older "La Montagnarde" bottle of uncertain vintage. Slightly hazy orange body, medium off-white head. Delicious aroma of oak, red grape, toast, bread, and alcohol. Earthy and yeasty, nicely complex. The body is a touch tart but dry on the whole, with white and red grapeskins, toast, pepper and other spices, and woody notes. Alcohol is clearly evident and gives this beer a champagne-like feel. Well-balanced; strong and complex without being syrupy or heavy. Excellent beer. LilKem (1210), Marietta, Ohio, USA Aug 1, 2005 ncie amber/honey color. aroma is of nutmeg, ginger, carmel, oats, honey roasts, apricots, some pond water, and peaches in heavy syrup. flavor is of pears and peaches, mixed with some apple juice, ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, and oats/grains. thanks b for this one as well :) Shag (1922), Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA Aug 1, 2005 Another impressive beer from Abbaye Des Rocs. It poured an amber color. The aroma is strong citrus, peaches, and vanilla. The flavor is rater spicy with smoth apricots, peaches, and orange. Its very smooth and hides the alcohol extremely well. Good stuff. 11026 (1799), Alabama, USA Jul 30, 2005 Bottle from Pailhead. Pours a solid amber colore. Eruptive white head that fades. Good lacing. Aroma is slightly skunky with chemical and fusel alcohol aromas all over. Light bodied. Flavors run harsh and chemical. Hopefully a bad bottle as this was disappointing. 21iceman40 (1731), vienna, West Virginia, USA Jul 30, 2005 this is a very very thick deep red sunset beer. the aroma of this beer is some nice peaches sliced up and cooked up in some brown sugar. watery with lots of dark fruits up front, i get a weird bitter version of sweet and sour chicken with it also, quite odd as i fuckin hate asian food. This is pretty damn good. Styles (1653), Lincoln Park, Michigan, USA Jul 21, 2005 Courtesy of Pailhead. Pours amber/dark golden with nice white head and lots of sediment. aroma and flavor are very metallic and oxidized. Some skunky cleaner character to it. Don’t know if was actually infected though. First bad beer from this brewery. Pigfoot (2226), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Jul 12, 2005 Thoroughly hazed and cloudy amber colored liquid pours from bottle to glass, giving a thick, long-lasting head of off-white foam, leaving lace. Very nice.
Aroma is yeast and citrus fruit, lightly spiced. A little sour, a little sweet, fruity all the way, zesty, and lively.
Taste: yum. It’s got what you want. This is the Belgian pale ale, down to the bone. Mellow, mild, but unrepentant in it’s incessant delivery of flavor.
A Belgian "amber ale" is a curious notion, not a category seen before, so far as I know. Right now, I love it. Ultra refreshment. This can be tossed back with ruthless aplomb, and little hurt is felt. An easy drinker, to be sure.
Once again, I can imagine no fault in this brewery. Everything they do is amazing in one shape or the next. Every hat I own falls out in their honor.
A nice introductory Belgian pale ale, a good one to wean your novice pals on! Belgo (145), Křge, Denmark Jul 9, 2005 Bottle. Dark golden with a fine head. Aromas of dried fruits, caramel and alcohol. On the palate the beer is heavy, sweet and actually a bit cloying after the first two mouthfulls. As a big fan of l’Abbaye des Rocs I am a bit disappointed by this one.
