lachesis (759), St Idesbald, Belgium Nov 23, 2004 Dirty amber color, hazy and with a small pale beige head. It has some alcohol in the nose and has no elegance at all. Overpowering aroma’s of medicinal sirup and also the smell of a sugar factory. (penetratig aroma’s of stuffed sugarbeet). The nose is ending with a vegetal touch of hops and sage.
The taste is smooth and has a fruity bitterness. In the afthertaste there are hints of dried nut skin ( Pel van okkernoten ) and a slight alcohol burn.
Dorqui (1353), Brescia, Italy Nov 21, 2004 Decidedly optimal. Good structure, foam, and total persistence. Balanced in spite of the elevated alcoholic range. JonMoore (1561), Loughborough, Leicestershire, England Nov 17, 2004 Bottle. Amber coloured with thick beige head, loads of sediment. Aroma is sweet and malty, with brown sugar, raisin and yeast. Taste is spicey, sweet, brown sugar and caramel. Nice on the palate with a warming finish. Very nice. Indra (2023), Prairie Village, Kansas, USA Nov 17, 2004 33cl bottle. Aroma is sweet, malty and spicy, full of doughy, fruity yeast with hints of brown sugar, raisin, orange peel, dark bread, licorice and clove. Medium amber-brown color, quite cloudy with a massive amount of sediment and an off-white, fine, uneven head. Flavor is sweet, fruity, malty and spicy, some red grape, light brown sugar, citrus and caramel before the lightly peppery, warming and very long finish. Palate is smooth and creamy. Highly flavorful. Seemingly a good after-dinner choice. heykevin (1269), Iowa City, Iowa, USA Oct 30, 2004 Well-aged bottle, complete with old-style (fantome-old) composite cork. Hoppy flowers, dusty and lightly musty aroma. Attractive malt flavor, minimal oxidized flavors, yet tastes well-aged. Strong honey flavor, and perhaps I’m believing the suggestion, but I do sense a rather dryish gingerbread character. This is quite nice. Thanks Matt for leaving this at my place (and sorry for drinking it...) Finally, something I like from the Brasserie des Rocs. dirkules (613), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Oct 15, 2004 just like abbaye original but with a slight light twist on the textures. A lot of flavour still going on... even more yeast than the original. A good brew! Spice, Pear, Plum, Raisin, Chocolate, Wood, Grass, how can you go wrong? Jukkabro (2981), Tampere, Finland Oct 7, 2004 Coppery color with little big bubbled white foam. Rich aroma with some fruits and spices, slight alcohol too. Full bodied and nice warm mouthfeel. Sweet start with notes of pepper and apple, ending is nicely alcoholic. Some yeast comes up and lasts long. This brew has all elements of good beer, still something is missing and this is only "basic" Belgian. YourDarkLord (1800), Urbana, Illinois, USA Sep 30, 2004 Quite good. Hazy copper with a nice beige head. Appealing. Nose is yeasty and fruity. Some traces of chocolate and candy. The body and the carbonation were medium and complimented the beer. The flavor was nicely sweet and complex with trace elements of various fruit and some chocolate and that warm feeling of alcohol as it went down.
