Commercial Description:
This beer, robust in taste and strength (9%) is the tops for flavour. It has a fruity and spicy bouquet, it has a stark taste, between a sharp bitterness and a caramelised flavour. It has no sugar, and this pure malt beer oscillates between various tendencies which all round off the bitterness. It has a peppery taste at the back of the mouth and a sharpness on the tongue. It is active in the mouth and lets each flavour express itself individually. It is very active in the glass which gives it a full, lasting, head. It has a long conclusion and puts emphasis on an ever present bitterness but less supported by the caramel. The final impression is one of gingerbread without sugar.

After cleaning up three remote controls, a TV tray and carpeting I am now ready to rate a beer that completely exploded on me and is now in two glasses. I hope the beer is better than our introduction. Pour is a nice amber with quite a bit of carbonation, white head that stays nicely on top of the beer. Aroma has the Belgium earthy yeast tones, nutty flavors, and raisens. Palate is lighter than expected from the aroma and the brewery. Lighter mouthfeel, some nuttieness and earthiness. There is definitely some complexity, but quite to the standard this brewery usually does. There is an earthy buttery essense to the taste and the finish continues with the butteriness and an astringency that is not expected, but not bad either. A very nice beer that is well worth the price, but not quite as good as other offerings from the ’des rocs’ line.

Bottle from River’s Bend. Poured hazy orange color with a large frothy white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Aroma was complex sweet yeast and citrus. Medium sticky body with thin particles and soft carbonation. Medium sweet yeasty flavor with medium sweet with small alcohol bite finish. Good sweet complex brew.

(Rating #1894)

A hazy orange/amber colored beer, with a light beige thick foamy head. The aroma is nice fruity, toffee and caramel. There are some hops in the back. The taste is complex fruity, raisins, prune, pears, peaches, orange. It has a nice sweetness and a little bitter. In the back some yeast and hops. It has a dry aftertaste.

Bottle at Cambrinus, 6/21 in Bruges. Pours dark amber with minimal head. Aroma of caramel malts with additional notes of fruits. Taste is sweet, bnut not cloy. There is a lot of complexity on this beer, with additional notes of spice and wine. A very good beer from one of my favorite brewers.
