Huge beige head, quickly disapearing. Dark amber in colour and hazy appearance. Powerful aromas of spicies and a wide range of fruits (cherries, orange peel above all). Tasty, with the same reminiscences of aromas in the mouthfeel. Alcoholic but well balanced and body enough. Nice brew.

In bottle (Brussels); very nice Noel beer .. quite light body, but very easy drinking compared to other Belgium Xmas beers .. Some cocoa, and caramel ... I wish I could buy this at home ... I would buy again for sure

750ml bottle. @home 31-08-2014.
BBD: 20/11/2011. Vintage one.
In short: a sweet boozy dark ale.
Pours hazy dark copper, lots of sediment, with average tan head. Moderate head retention, poor lacing. Ripe fruit, raisins, chocolate, caramel aromas. Medium body, average carbonation, some crispy texture. Taste follows the nose, some liquor notes, alcohol noticed, ripe fruit, caramel notes, viscous texture. Still enjoyable.

Alengrin (1743) - BELGIUM - JUL 13, 2014
UPDATED: AUG 7, 2014 Classical Belgian Christmas ale, with mousse- to rocky, off-white head and a dark amber to copper colour, clear but cloudy after adding the ’fond’, as it should be. Rich and appealing aroma of banana, pear, strawberry, passion fruit, dark chocolatey and caramel malts, aniseed, floral hops, brown rhum, cloves, ginger powder, coriander, sometimes regrettably also a hint of red cabbage (DMS). Full and deep maltiness in the mouth, caramel candy and dark fruits, leading to a gingerbread-like effect in combination with the spices, slowly increasing in bitterness towards the finish, mouth-filling toasted malts (coffee touch), gentle floral hops and some warming, vinous but never astringent alcohol. Not overspiced like several other Wallonian Christmas ales, this one manages to find the right balance. Love it.

Bottle from Henderson Wines. Murky brown body with a thin beige head that fades. Light lacing. Aroma of raisin, wood, prune and yeast. Flavour of earthy, flowery hops, dried fruits, dark malts and spices. Medium body with a smooth, slightly foamy mouthfeel. Soft fizz. A complex, warming Belgian Ale.

750 ml bottle sampled at a BA tasting 2007 vintage from backlog notes 07/08. Pours a hazy amber brown color with a large fluffy off white head. The aroma and flavor have sweet caramel malts, yeast, some fruity character, raisins, ample holiday spices, dry yet creamy smooth, some warming alcohol to the finish.

330ml Bottle from Good Spirits Co, Glasgow (Ł3.80):
Spicy with a lot of sweetness, mainly from some dark fruits such as prunes, plums & some dates. There is a toasted malt aroma that is complimented by some sugar & a medium strength alcohol smell also comes through alongside oak & faint vanilla.
Medium brown with red tinges & a cloudy body. A bubbly, brownish-white 0.5cm head that fades to a fine lacing quite quickly.
Spicy with lots of sweetness both from the dark fruits mentioned in the smell but also from the sugar. There’s a strong taste of prunes with some vanilla & alcohol.
This one was quite a spicy, sweet and medium bodied beer that had a slightly warming alcohol taste to it. There was a fair amount of carbonation in this one & the beer seems boozy with a sticky finish.

An okay Belgian offering but it never really hit the heights of some of the countries better strong ales, coming across a little strong and without the best of balance between flavours. I doubt I’ll be picking this one up again.
