4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 marcus (5104) - Sacramento, California, USA - MAR 19, 2005
This dark brown ale pours with a short tan head that dissipates rather quickly. There is a plethora of floating particles that are clearly visible when pouring. The aroma is strong vanilla and the mouth feel is slightly carbonated. The intense flavor is accented by malt and caramel. This is a very nice brew, perhaps the best from Abbaye de Rocs.

sampled at the pizza port belgian fest 2005. This is a very nicely done beer. Dark brown color with a wide variety of flavors, this is a ’must try’
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 ClarkVV (3579) - Allston, Massachusetts, USA - MAR 10, 2005
UPDATED: MAR 29, 2005 Whatever vintage the shipment that just hit the U.S. Bottle 3/6/05. Nothing like a brasserie des Rocs beer to break up a mid tasting slump. Pours a dark brown, deep magenta tinted body with lots of light tan head that is initially quite mountainous, but quickly recedes to just a slight covering. Aroma of strong yeast, dark fruits, dark candi sugar and rum-soaked raisins. Flavor begins with a fruity sweetness, with more residual candi-like sugar on the way. The texture is lightly fizzy at first, but giving it time to breath, as one should, it turns in to a much stronger body, with only soft carbonation. Light cloves, caramel, yeast and a bit of bitterness on the finish. While I can’t say I love this beer, taking it all in, it still comes off as a well-made brew. May be a bit young yet, time will tell. My first Imperial Trippel (kidding).
4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 muzzlehatch (4424) - Burlington, Vermont, USA - MAR 10, 2005
750 ml bottle gratefully shared with MartinT, tiggmtl, ClarkVV and Rastacouere. Big caramel-mahogany body with a vast profusion of foam that lasts...malty-pungent dark-fruited nose...solid, heavily malty thick body, some toasty breadiness amidst heavy sweetness which is going to be cloying for some but worked for me. Another top-notch effort from one of the world’s greatest breweries.
3.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 tiggmtl (4521) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - MAR 9, 2005
Strong bitter orange with fair spiciness in an aroma that shows incredible promise. Opaque brown body is topped by thin but lasting tan head that recedes with some lace. Very sweet, somewhat cloying flavour has notes of orange, dark malts, some ash, but the sweetness is unfortunately dominant. Fair carbonation, good effervescence and medium body. Bottle enjoyed with ClarkVV, MartinT, muzzlehatch and Rastacouere.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 ChillCoat (1030) - Concord, California, USA - MAR 7, 2005
UPDATED: APR 13, 2005 Bottled. Pours murky deep brown. The head is frothy and ivory colored except in the center where the sediment hit it where it is a rich brown color. The aroma is yeast and banana with some dark fruits also evident. The first thing that I notice it the thick mouth feel of this beer followed by the tinge of the carbonation. The flavor is a bit dry and consists of spices and the dark fruits along with malts and rock candy. Sharp almost astringent aftertaste.
4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 MartinT (6934) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - MAR 7, 2005
UPDATED: NOV 27, 2005 The Lure: Stepping into known Des Rocs territory I see. Always a pleasure! You know all by now this is where earthy berries, oranges and multiple spices are transformed into eclectic and scrumptious candies, perfect for the most nourishing desserts.
The Festivities: Sweet berries and red licorice sticks speak highly of their orange and yeast comrades. Cocoa dryness and herbal bitterness swim amidst the regal candies, as a delicious mouthfeel is created.
Transcendence: Yes, candy is predictable but then again we like it that way, don’t we?
4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Rastacouere (6058) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - MAR 7, 2005
Very foamy thick fully laced rocky and frothy goodness tops the muddy brown body among which abounds yeast chunks. Typical Abbaye des Rocs nose, explosive malts and yeast, plenty of jammy fruit esters and spicy hints (thyme, herbs). Appealing pecan pie, caramel and grapey complexity of the regular Des Rocs with a hefty dose of strawberries. Spicy and very sweet flavor profile, fruit pie, strong cloves. Has a definite christmas feel to it. I’d perhaps prefer a bit more hops to clean the sweetness a bit, but this is very good, if a bit cloying. Very smooth and comfortable medium body, maybe a bit thinner than the original. Okay, I don’t get the purpose of this beer that has characteristics from both the grand cru and regular, but loving the other 2, I can only enjoy this one.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 papajohn (1249) - San Diego (Mira Mesa), California, USA - MAR 4, 2005
UPDATED: MAR 19, 2005 Ruby color when held up to light with lots of particulate matter. Huge foamy beige head. Aroma is sweet dark fruit and a little yeast. Flavor starts rich and sweet with a little plum, a hint of prune and some black cherry. The finish is lightly tart and kinda dry. Smooth rich palate. A little rich, but good. 10% ABV, WoW, didn’t notice.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Enniskillen (2029) - Salinas, California, USA - MAR 2, 2005
Body is a brown ruby, with a thick tan head. Aroma is caramel, dried fruit, apricots, sugar, alcohol. Taste is very sweet, very complex. Nice beer.
