3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Fin (5749) - Merton, Oxfordshire, England, - MAR 31, 2008
Cask at The Woolpack, Banbury, Oxon 31-03-08 This is a very, very dark brown beer on first view I was not even sure what it was it looked very stout or poirter like, is it a bitter? Has a sticky off white head, there is good bitterness and the hops were still in the mouth as I was half way down the High Street. There is a good balance though with some nice sweet malts and a little sprinkling of rich indulgent cocoa, I liked this, but in the pub I was struggling to catergorise this maybe it is a bitter but its bloody dark, very dark in fact although taste wise I have to say its got more bitter characteristics. Nice to try a dark beer from Abbeydale and once again a very decent beer at that.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 imdownthepub (7461) - Banbury, Oxfordshire, ENGLAND - APR 2, 2008
Cask conditioned at The Woolpack, Banbury. Dark brown, almost black with white head. Unbelievably difficult to categorise, this is darkly roasted with coffee husky notes, chocolate malts, but also there is a really pleasant hoppy bitterness, almost IPA like in hops with a light grassynotes, sweetish but dry. It is a most complex beer and very enjoyable. The finish is long and burnt. Great stuff.
3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 albertane (378) - Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, ENGLAND - MAR 29, 2008
Cask at the King William IV, Sneinton, Nottingham. I had this beer in the middle of a session with stouts and porters and it fit right in. It’s a dark brown beer with a rich malt character (redolent of mushrooms maybe) with some sharp bitterness in the finish.

Small offwhite coarse head. Rich deep brown body. Faint earthy caramelly aroma. Watery fruity caramelly taste with wooden, peppery notes. Somewhat earthy, with traces of peas. Aftertaste dry. Nice! (0.47l cask at the John Hewitt, Belfast.)
