COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Abbey Ale honors the ancient tradition of monks who perfected the art of brewing beer to support the monastery and the brothers with their "liquid bread". We offer up our support and thank them with a 25 cent donation to St. Joseph’s Abbey with every bottle of this heavenly brew. Dark in amber color, the aroma of caramel, fruits and cloves invites you to contemplate the creamy head of this "dubbel" or double ale. Abita Abbey Ale is a malty brew, top-fermented and bottle aged to rapturous perfection.

22 oz. painted bottle. Popped after the Saints won their 1st Super Bowl. Nice brown, cloudy body, fizzy head. Smell of fruit leather, a little clove, and touch of pipe tobacco. Taste is a little sugary, but not as much as the North Coast Cru d"Or I had last night. Solid maltiness with caramel and toffee. Just a touch of horse blanket, but a slight tobacco aftertaste. Fleeting impressions of cherry, Beeman’s gum and broiled steak. This is barely a year old, but tonight seemed best reason to open it. But this shows some rough spots that would smooth to a complex brew if it were to lay down a while longer.

Bottle that I opened up to drink during the super bowl. Opened one IN beer and one LA beer. Pours a clear ruby color with a medium sized taupe head. Smells a bit like cereal, a touch sweet, dusty almost, and a bit like nori around sushi rice. Weird. Medium bodied, earthy. Boozy right away, plum and cardboard. Finishes up with a little tangy bitterness and a touch more sweetness. Another one for the drain.

Bottle - Much better than I thought, as I haven’t heard great things about Abita. Pours murky brown with a foamy tan head. Light cloves and Belgian spice on the nose with some honey and light breadiness. Taste is more of the same, with caramelly malt, sweet breadiness, light spice, and a bit of bitterness on the finish. It’s nothing too crazy, but bready and pleasant. Nice brew.

Pours amber. The nose is like roasted corn on the cob to me. While I like roasted corn on the cob I do not necessarily want my beer to smell like it. The flavor, however, is a little better. A sweet maltiness that bears resemblance to dark fruits. Better than I expected.

Banana esters on the nose with hints of caramel and mild chocolate with traces of clove. Pours a caramel amber with no head. Caramel malts with clove and banana, with hints of bubblegum and milk chocolate with traces of cinnamon. Not bad, the aroma made me a little worried but the flavor came out in the end, a nice malty flavor with belgian yeast characteristics.

I think the backbone of this beer is probably really good. Not that you would know it. The smell and taste is overrun with cloves. Way too many cloves. This beer has a beautiful color and head. I think if Abita had just not included the cloves it would have been really good. I wish I could comment on the malt and hop profile, but I can’t. The cloves.

Bottle. Pretty silk-screened design on it too! Copper pour with a moderate frothy beige head. Aroma is fruity(mango, pear, tropical fruit) and spicy with Belgian yeast, and flowers. Taste is also rather fruity with sweet malt, cocoa, light caramel, light spice, Belgian yeast, flowers and light alcohol. Body is medium with moderate carbonation. Slick in spots and light prickly feeling on the tongue. Ends with more fruit notes, light spice, fresh cut flowers, yeast notes, cocoa and caramel. Not too bad but a bit too heavy on the fruit.

In the bomber bottle from Lucy’s in New Orleans. Pours a deep amber burgundy color with a large beige head. Has a meaty aroma consisting of a slight smokiness. Thick and rich fruitiness with grapes and raisins. This is one nice beer to come out of Abita.
