COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Abbey Ale honors the ancient tradition of monks who perfected the art of brewing beer to support the monastery and the brothers with their "liquid bread". We offer up our support and thank them with a 25 cent donation to St. Joseph’s Abbey with every bottle of this heavenly brew. Dark in amber color, the aroma of caramel, fruits and cloves invites you to contemplate the creamy head of this "dubbel" or double ale. Abita Abbey Ale is a malty brew, top-fermented and bottle aged to rapturous perfection.

Nice color, dark amber with a little brown. Aroma is a little fruity with caramel in there. Has flavors of bread and caramel. A very nice beer. Smooth and relaxing.

An amber/burgandy color. Hazy with an off white head that had a burgandy tint to it. Smooth and creamy with nice size and retention. Some real nice lacing. Smells fruity in the nose with a hint of booze coming through. Smells a bit like sour dough bread. Dark cherries. Some clove. Not getting any caramel as mentioned on the bottle however. Just a bit strong with the sweet dark fruit, but still very nice. The taste is fruity with nary a hint of alcohol. Very sweet in flavor. Decent bit of bitterness, but nothing too strong. Rich and malty. Bready. Dark fruit. Starts to get a bit sugary as it warms. Pretty nice actually. Nicely balanced. Medium to medium/full mouthfeel. Very dry. Leaves a welcome alcohol warmth at the back end. Very nice carbonation. Covers the palate very well. As this beer warms, the alcohol vanishes and it becomes very easy to drink. It is a bit sweet and rich, so I might not make a night of it. It’s still very good and worth a try if available. The ease of drinkability and high ABV makes for a dangerous combination at first, but as I go along I started to sip.

The aroma is cherry and sweet grapes. Earthy grain-bill. Funky spice is very mild. Almonds and figs. Sweet rather than bitter; red wine nose. The appearance is ruby red/rose colored, with touches of purple. Decent head retention. The flavor is dark grapes and dates. Green raisins. Grainy barley backbone. Beautiful wine-like flavor on the front of the tongue. Puckery and tart; tannin-like. Spicy bite at the end. Appropriately horsey. The palate is thick and juicy. Slick and buttery. A little mild for style, but pleasant. Better than the sum of its parts.

Sweet caramel and sour yeast Belgian aroma wafting off of this one! Beautiful reddish-orange color with a white head. Nice sourness around the sides of the tongue with sweet malt and alcohol rolling over the top. Nice, lingering aftertaste makes this a great Belgian style ale.

The first pour is a clear, very dark cherry wood stain topped by a cream-colored, very dense head that lingers. Banana bread and spicy alcohol on the nose, a little bit of dried fruit. Foamy mouthfeel from the head and relatively high carbonation level.

UPDATED: NOV 28, 2009 Most have had a bad bottle the first time. A very malty aroma with a lot of malt and caramel. The flavor is dominated by the caramel but is pretty good. Original score 7,1,2,1,4 for a 1.5 This score is only this high because of a fairly intriguing, malty water aroma. It’s sour with some fruit tones but not good. I pretty much couldn’t even stand my two ounce sample. Bad.

Pours a cloudy brown with a large head. Aroma is spicy, boozy, and floral. The flavor in this one is excellent; Of spices and clove, flower petals, brown sugar, maple, and more. This is a very nice one overall, and I’m surprised it’s not rated higher. Overall, very good.
