COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Abbey Ale honors the ancient tradition of monks who perfected the art of brewing beer to support the monastery and the brothers with their "liquid bread". We offer up our support and thank them with a 25 cent donation to St. Joseph’s Abbey with every bottle of this heavenly brew. Dark in amber color, the aroma of caramel, fruits and cloves invites you to contemplate the creamy head of this "dubbel" or double ale. Abita Abbey Ale is a malty brew, top-fermented and bottle aged to rapturous perfection.

I made a recent visit to the brewpub in Abita Springs and had this on-tap along with a cask doppelbock and satsuma wit. This was served in a pint glass instead of a goblet, but I rarely get proper glassware anywhere. Had a nice aroma of dark fruit. Taste was similar to the aroma. Little carbonation, head, or lacing, and mouthfeel was correct for the style. Hid the alcohol fairly well. Good beer.

22oz bomber poured into my Chimay Trappist Glass. Pours a cloudy light brown with about a finger of thick off-white head. Aroma of sweet and doughy malt with a little banana and caramel with just a little hint of spice. Taste is light sweet and light bitter. Caramel, light spicy hops a little banana. Full bodied with a thick and creamy texture. Lively carbonation and a long bitter finish. Overall, it’s not too bad. Much better than I was expecting from Abita.

Again, it has been a long time since I had this beer, but based on my ratings from another App I have it was good.

Pours a hazy deep amber with thin white head. aroma of roasted malts and chocolate. Flavor is malty but not very powerful. Pretty weak.

Bomber. Deep copper red body with a dense khaki head. The nose is sweet and doughy with some bananas. There is also a little bit of leather funk and caramel. Lots of caramel and a little bit of orange peel. There is also some nice sweet glazed donuts. A decent brew overall that has a little bit of booze in the finish. Good but not great.

This beer pours an orange color with a smallish head and no real lace to speak of.

The aroma is spicy with some orange liqueur and lots of sugary sweetness.

The flavor is sweet and tastes more than anything of a large array of spices and slightly burnt marshed-mallows. There is also a fair amount of alcohol flavor here as well, this I wouldn’t be surprised if it were 11% the way the alcohol came through. The finesse required to pull off a beer like this is almost completely lacking here. It’s like they hit all the flavor notes but never took anytime to order them or iron them out.

22oz bottle. Poured into tulip glass. Appearance: Dark brown, hazy, minimal head, white foam, good lacing. Aroma: Sweet. Honey, grapes, figs, plums, cherries. Taste: Sweet malts. Lots and lots of carbonation. A little sourness. Vanilla, brown sugar, grapes, some molasses. Some bitterness on finish. Palate: Med bodied. Smooth. Creamy. Leaves almost like a taste residue on tongue after finish. Overall: It’s alright. I do like some of Abita’s brews, but this isn’t like my favorite. I’m happy to have tried it, but better dubbels are out there. Give it a shot though, it’s not bad.

Bottle. Thanks to my Dad for picking this up. I’m heading to New Orleans for the first time with my folks in the morning so this is quite fitting. Super cloudy, muddy, reddish copper with a steady off white head. Nose is yeast, over-ripe plums, dates, and figs, clove, nutmeg. Flavor is bland, overly sweet over-ripe fruits, light spice, but very blah overall.
