COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Abbey Ale honors the ancient tradition of monks who perfected the art of brewing beer to support the monastery and the brothers with their "liquid bread". We offer up our support and thank them with a 25 cent donation to St. Joseph’s Abbey with every bottle of this heavenly brew. Dark in amber color, the aroma of caramel, fruits and cloves invites you to contemplate the creamy head of this "dubbel" or double ale. Abita Abbey Ale is a malty brew, top-fermented and bottle aged to rapturous perfection.

I bought 2 bottles of this at 4.99 per thinking I could get more beer (Belgian abbey) for the buck. The 1st bottle was the funkiest wasabi spiked garbage I’ve had in a while. I was going to trash the brew masters reputation thoroughly. I opened the second bottle today and it was quite different. Still that indescribable wasabi-sour funk but not as prevalent. Appearance and pour are nice but that sour weirdness is a bit disconcerting. Now as it warms a bit the wasabi spike has diminished and its more of a sour apple. I’m going to the store now get a couple St Bernardus Abt12s

Sipping this beer bought from a kitschy bodega on the ground floor of the fabulous hotel I’m staying in at the corner of Canal and Bourbon streets in NOLA. pours a dark scotch-like amber with a minimal white head. Aroma is sweet with notes of over-ripe fruit, apricots, figs and apples. medium body with a slightly off bitterness, notes of caramel and over-ripe banana. finish is slightly boozy. enjoyable but not overly so.

Transfer from BA reviewed on 3-11-12- - Poured from bottle into tulip shaped glass Appearance – Pours a rusty red-brown color. Upon pouring there is a huge thick foamy tan head that forms. It persists for some time giving way to some very nice lacing. Smell- Sweet fruit aromas abound. Apple and tropical fruits of banana and mango are the most potent. There is a bit of caramel and breadiness mixed in with the fruits as well. All in all, the aroma is quite potent and quite pleasant. Taste – It starts out with the fruit depicted in the nose. The apple and banana are the thickest and heartiest, but darker fruit and even a little bit of caramel are present and become more prevalent toward the middle of the taste. The taste experience finishes with a bit of a roasty and bready maltiness with a lingering bit of fruit and caramel sweetness. Mouthfeel – Medium bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. The body is a little bit thin for the abv and style and the carbonation a bit too high. Overall – Other than the mouthfeel, the beer really has very nice characteristics. It has a nice sweeter fruit profile mixed with a nice malty backbone. A fairly good sweeter dubbel.

650ml bottle. Pours a medium to deep amber, with a beige head. Spicy, yeasty, quite phenolic aroma, cloves, malt, caramel, orange peel. Off-dry, medium to full bodied, mid bitterness, creamy CO2. Fruity, spicy, phenolic taste, orange peel, cloves, caramel, alcohol. A bit off-balance, slightly harsh, but maybe good for ageing? (2014-01-31)

Tap pours dark copper with an off-white head. Aroma is olive, vegetable, yeast funk, spices. Taste is clove, spice, caramel, yeasty. Medium body with sweet finish. I guess I will have to try it again, not sure if it was an off keg.

Bottle from Total Wine. Poured into a chalice. Typical looking dubbel with less head than usual. Golden amber with some haze. Aroma of malts, dark fruits, dark sugars, mild hops and bread. The taste was a little less exciting than the aroma. Although the Belgian yeasts were present, the dark candies and fruits were rather muted and a subtle almost tart dryness was present. A little cardboard flavor as well. Not sure what that was. Medium body and carbonation. Finish is dry and papery.

Draft. Amber/brown with medium off white head. Aroma of caramel and light Belgian notes. Medium body with some yeasty Belgian notes, caramel, and a hint of spice.

Bottle, shared at game night, and tried alongside Lips of Faith Wild Dubbel. This had a more tawny body with a longer lasting, creamier head. Lots more yeast character here, quite estery. Slightly chewy malts, dark caramel, dates, marzipan, with nice yeasty spice character. Rustic, and although it is fairly simple, it had more Belgian character than the New Belgium brew.

3/6/2014. 22 oz. bottle. Poured dark amber with a tan head. Aromas are fruity and malty with caramel. Sweetness from dried fruit, alcohol, caramel and light on hops. Not bad.

I am seldom disappointed in Belgian style strong ales but this is one of those rare caes. Light color and flavor for a Dubbel style, tastes of grape wine and earth at first and finishes with some brown sugar and...i dont know, something astringent. Not horribly offensive, but a very weak effort in the grand scheme of imitated Belgian brews.

UPDATED: FEB 17, 2014 Upon drinking this dubbel seems to be lacking. This beer comes off juicy (grape) with a touch of spice and light esters. The finish is smooth but fleeting
