UPDATED: FEB 17, 2008 On tap at the Abita Brewpub. Spun sugar aroma. Still and headless. Honey colored. Sweet base in the taste with a smooth mildly honey sweet finish. Almost tasted like nectar water. Disappointingly bland.

Had on tap at Chimes in Baton Rouge, La. Pours a headless dark orange with little to no head. Faint perfumey fruity aroma. Flavor has some elements of fermented fruit, alcohol and maple syrup. More akin to a fruity malt liquor than a doppelbock in my opinion. Sticky, but not in a good way, mouthfeel. Not the best I have had from Abita. Can see it pleasing the college crowd, more flavor than a malt liquor.

wunderbier (1434) - Tampere, FINLAND - MAR 27, 2005
Draft, shaker. Hazy peach-yellow hue with a creamy, small, white head. A variety of light fruits: red apple, green grapes, peaches. A sugary sweetness looms in the background. *sips* Wha?...peach/banana baby food, no lie. Peaches, bananas and artificial sweetness abound. Medium-full body, watery yet thick texture, average carbonation. Very clean throughout. The bottom line is: blindly tasting I had no idea what the style was...I though maybe maibock, but it’s got a lot of fruit in it. Doppelbock, no way. Wierd.

a 98 and a 2000 bottle. Aroma of caramel and vegetable. Sweet caramel flavor. Low carbonation, smooth, medium body. 98 seemed to be the same as the 2000 only to a lessor more aged degree.

Nip bottle from 2000: Pours a clear golden bronze with a thin lacy white head. Some floral butterscotch diacetyl aroma with mild complexities. Has some sweet caramel maltiness and decent viscosity. Seems to have aged well. An enjoyable doppelbock, but should be darker in color.

on draft freakn frog las vegas: poured bright yellow with a tangy white head and effervesence. not much nose some fresh fruit sweetness. this character followed on to the palate mostly sweet but not really malty more of a rock candy way no real dissernable hop flavors. some graham cracker qualities. didnt have much more going on for 8%? uninteresting and probably should be moved out of the dobblebock category due to color and light malt characteristics. actually, the owner didnt know what category this fit into...makes since now.

aracauna (2683) - Georgia, USA - OCT 14, 2004
Surprisingly pale gold with not a lot of head at all. A faint bit of apples in the aroma and a bit of sweetened straw malt. The flavor is low on bitterness, lightly sweet with a little malt character and that apple flavor. It’s really a boring beer and far from the best doppelbocks available.

Draft - Golden yellow with no head. Mildly sweet with a somewhat dry finish. Drinkable, but not all that noteworthy.

UPDATED: AUG 20, 2004 A doppelbock? Suuuuuuuure, if you say so... Brownish yellow, no head. Peppery, spicy aroma. Corny, vegetable overly sweet flavor. This should be drunk from a bottle in brown paper bag. C'mon, Abita Andy Gator, embrace your malt liquorness. Quit fooling yourself.

Cookie dough alright, but not enough hop bite to give it much of any distinction. One of my least favorite barleywines. Not really and truly BAD, but lacking real character and depth. If you want complexity go somwhere else.
