2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 10/20
On tap. Color is dark amber with no head by the time I got the glass. Taste and aroma are a mix of hop and malt with too much hop in the taste for a Christmas ale in my opinion.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
12oz bottle (best by 3/7/14) - pours dark amber with ivory head and decent lacing. Nose is pine with hints of caramel. Sip adds roast, some spice and tree sap. I like it as Christmas ale, but not so much as an Amber. Better than I expected, per the reviews I read.

UPDATED: NOV 24, 2013 *2012* I have got to quit taking a chance on this brewery. As with most everything they put out it has that dirt flavor to it. Not sure if that is from the water in thier area but everything they do has that muddy water taste. Other than that this one has an odd taste of something like licorish that just doesn’t do it for me. Yet another big fail from Abita. -This is what I said last year- ..... Now for this year! OK forgot how bad this one was last year. Rated it as a 1 last year but by my mistake saw a sampler sitting there and grabbed it not looking over my notes. I think I was too much into the christmas spirit last year to call it a 1 because this is among the most awful tasting mess. Did the brewer scorch the batch? Did someone forget that clean water is a must? Why does this taste like burnt bread?
NASTY! that is all I can say about it. Got to remember never buy Abita.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Tap. Pours deep brown with creamy beige head. Aroma is heavy grain, fig, raisin, some spice, and floral hops. Flavor is predominantly bready malts with some grassy hop bitterness and faint dark fruit notes; dry finish. Medium body and carbonation.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Draft in NOLA. Pours medium.brown with a thick creamy head and lots of lacing. Tastes hoppy, musky, and like some dry cloves and ginger. Medium.body and low/medium carbonation. Smells like malt and oak.

2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
Yet another poor effort from Abita and I was excited by the looks of it. It has a cool deep burgundy pour with a big tan head that leaves plenty of lacing. Unfortunately, it really goes downhill from there. Aroma is a funky blend of hop and malt and the taste is just off. Not sure what they are going for here. Slightly malty, slightly hoppy but neither work. Blah

Not a bad flavor but, other components aren’t there. Very watery thin body. Overly dry finish.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
THOUGHTS: Nothing really special and not at all really Christmasy. Just a well-made, nicely-balanced amber ale. Fairly British.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a clear, dark amber that was nearly brown in the glass with a large to huge, beige head that diminished very slowly and left good lacing. The aroma had moderate toasted and nutty malts; light caramel; moderate resinous and earthy hops; and light floral and citrus hops. The initial flavor was lightly sweet and bitter; while the finish was slightly sweet, moderately bitter and lightly acidic with an average to long duration. There was caramel, citrus hops, toasted and nutty malts, earthy and resinous hops and burnt malt. The light to medium body was a little watery with soft carbonation and an ever so slightly metallic if anything finish.

2.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
Date Rated: April 13, 2013...
Glassware: Corsendonk snifter...
Occasion: Les Mis and a Creole brewery--straining thematic proximity...
Appearance: dark ruby velvet body with clinging off-white head--could be imposing with solid tracing as thee glass drains...
Aroma: pricks of spruce and citrus make this festive indeed; otherwise noteworthy for a brown ale...
Palate: full-bodied but oily, swiftly slickening the throat; flattened as soda--skunked?...
Taste: softened, mellow hops with enough malt to balance its flavor; not robust enough to garner interest in this genre ...
Overall: Okay, admittedly late for the Christmas beer seasonals, but they must be consumed sooner than later...this one is curious--alcohol strength is undetectable, but thee thinness of the beer ill-suits the style--this particular bottle may have been aged (a month after its best-by date) and thus could be adversely affected....
