Crystal clear, moderate copper color with small to medium sized off white head. Aroma is malty, bit of orange peel and cinnamon, slightly metallic. Flavor is malty, crisp, bit of caramel and vanilla, palate is a bit thin, with a balanced finish. In a sea of uninspiring winter/holliday ales, this is average at best.

First rating so I hope this goes well! 12 oz. draft during the pub crawl and re-tasted the draft at a local bar. Off white head and pours nicely. Appearance is amber and taste is somewhat nutty and toasty. The beer finishes with a very soapy taste. Not too bad for a seasonal from Abita.

ajolly2 (129) - USA - DEC 8, 2006
2006 version. Appearance is ruddy and translucent. Light head and lacing. First impression of the aroma: dog’s breath, salted peanuts, and something fruity. I know that sounds off-putting, and it is, but what it lacks in aroma is made up for just slightly in taste. Very light body. Finish: not too dry, not too acidic, not too bitter. I can’t quite describe the flavor; there’s something unnatural about it. Expected a better Christmas present out of Abita Springs.

(Besty by 04/23/2007) The spicing is on the light side, if this is spiced at all. The body is light a on the dry side. Not a whole lot going on here. Lamo.

2006..Pours with a great head!...and the lacing is swell...very nice people-pleasing taste!...light brown...some sweet subtle aromas!...is a nice simply made brew! ..again...simple beer can be great beer!

Silphium (3167) - East Lansing, Michigan, USA - NOV 30, 2006
2006 version. Deep amber-copper body with a medium, dissipating off-white head. Sweet, cerealy aroma with grassy hops and berries. The body is lighter than I expected, cerealy and toasty, with light sweetness paired with grassy hops. Unbalanced acidity mars the palate. Would that the aroma was an indication of the body...

Has a flavor more like Newcastle than anything else, but a touch lighter. Makes for a great Christmas beer, as it should. A nice change from the Fall Fest.

2006 Draught - I might be the first to rate this one for the year, and I guess they did a little better this time around? Amber color with light grainy aroma. Taste is very grainy-chewy-malty. Alot like a turbodog. Not my favorite style, but this is a nice change of pace.

ElGaucho (2201) - Minnetonka, Minnesota, USA - SEP 10, 2006
Sweet caramel malt aroma. Nice. Beautiful, reddish amber color with yellow hues on the edges. No lace, mostly eroding head. Off-white to almost light tan head. Flavor is frankly ordinary. Dry and somewhat vacuous. Remarkably flavorless for a 6%+ beer. Seeing that this was brewed in December, it may have lost some of its character in the 9 months hence. Very bland and dry.

Ernest (6198) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - APR 23, 2006
UPDATED: FEB 28, 2012 Bottle (2011 batch). Head is initially average sized, frothy, off-white, mostly diminishing. Body is dark amber to medium brown. Aroma is lightly malty (grain, cookie, husks), lightly hoppy (apricot), with light notes of dirt/dust, grape jelly, and manure. Flavor is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately bitter, unclean, husky. Light to medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Horrible aftertaste, thin/watery, bland, not much in the aroma (which has off notes too). Typical awful Abita quality, sadly.
