COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Abita Grapefruit Harvest is a brilliant golden IPA with a subtle zest of grapefruit flavor and aroma that enhances the strong hop character. This bright, snappy brew is made with real Louisiana Ruby-Red grapefruits, pale, pilsner and caramel malts and cascade hops. The strong hop profile and subtle zest of grapefruit make it a good choice with grilled chicken. This brew would also pair well with ceviche or raw Louisiana oysters.

Many IPAs tend to have a citrusy taste due to the hops used in their brewing, so it would seem to make sense to brew an IPA with grapefruit. Ironically enough, Abita Grapefruit Harvest IPA isnít particularly grapefruit-y nor IPA-y (yeah I know those terms donít exist Ė so sue me). Itís more of a pale ale with some fruit essence to it and in that respect it works.

I poured a 12oz bottle into a goblet. It had a best by date of 4/15/15 and cost $2.50 ($0.21 per ounce).

Appearance: Hazy orange hue, though some carbonation is visible. Pours to a small, white, foamy head which laces and retains pretty well.

Smell: Typical citrusy IPA aroma with some flower notes, though a bit milder than most. No noticeable grapefruit aroma, though.

Taste: The palette here is what I would consider a very pedestrian, or mainstream, or even ďstarterĒ IPA. Coming in at only 40 IBUs, Abita Grapefruit Harvest IPA is not exactly a hop bomb. And despite the name, itís not exactly a fruity bomb, either. Thereís a solid pale malt foundation which accounts for mild sweetness, but thereís also distinct Cascade hop presence as well. A light citrus and floral flavor combination is noticeable from beginning to end of each swig. The actual grapefruit character is more of an implication than an overt flavor component. Some tartness and a hint of zesty spice, but not much in the way of authentic fruit or juiciness. It actually emerges more in the aftertaste than at any other time in the palette.

Drinkability: A mild palette delivered via a crisp mouthfeel is usually a winning combination, and Abita Grapefruit Harvest IPA is no exception. Itís even refreshing for a moment while in the mouth, and it finishes quite clean, as well. At 6% ABV it could (and should) be a little bigger in body and taste, but at least it doesnít come across as a session beer.

Well this one is interesting. The aroma is a grassy kind of in your face weird grapefruit aroma. Itís almost too much. Taste is just a lot of like ruby red grapefruit with some grassiness. I honestly donít really know what part of this is an IPA. Itís not really bad but itís not really good. Iím having trouble with this one. I want to like it but theres that weird almost fake grapefruit that is making it hard to drink.

Yellow with a orange hue and thin white head. Grapefruit more so in the nose than flavor, but itís all good/enjoyable. Little thin and oily, but still decent.

Serving: bottle from Wegmans Leesburg. Pours a hazy, almost muddy gold with a thin white ring for a head. Floral, soapy nose. Odd grapefruit pith and rotting citrus flavor. Very dry. Iíve had worse but thatís not saying much. Pass on this one.

Draft at the source. Hazy straw color, medium white head. Aroma of light citrus. Taste has grapefruit but not much acidity. OK.

Hazy orange pour. Metallic smell asking with fruitiness. Taste is grapefruit, metal and Crystal malt and tea. Kind of Amber like flavor with some grapefruit. Drinkable but tastes cheap and like a mix of tea hops and Amber ale malt.

Bottle at home in Salisbury - picked up at Stateline. Pours mostly clear orange-gold with a large, frothy white head. Whoa, yeah, lots of grapefruit juice in the aroma, perhaps some grapefruit gummy candies. Medium sweet flavor with some bready pale malts, a bit of pine, citrus rind, more grapefruit essence, faint lemon. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Moderately sweet to finish with refreshing, juicy grapefruit character, some bitter pine notes, understated pale bread, lemon, tangerine. Actually pretty decent.

[Bottle] Pours a nice orange color with a small white head on top. Aroma of grapefruit zest and lighter malts. More of a juicy compared to a hoppy nose. Taste is of grapefruit, blood orange, mild pine, residual sugars and floral notes. Overall not particularly hoppy, or the hops are at least overshadowed by the grapefruit juice. Effervescent and dry. Iím sure the masses will love this beer this summer. Not terrible if you like beer as well.

Fruit or ipa? The grapefruit dominates the aroma. The pour is light amber w/ a nice white head that leaves some lacing. The taste is an interesting blend of grapefruit & hops. Iíll give it props for originality!
