COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Honey Rye Ale is made with pale, wheat, and rye malts. It also has a blend of four different caramel malts. We used 20% rye malt to give the beer a very good rye flavor and aroma. The extra rye also gives a fuller mouthfeel to the beer. We added a generous amount of wildflower honey as well. This gives the beer a sweet aroma and flavor. We used Willamette hops, but the beer is not very bitter and has very little hop aroma. This allows the flavors of the rye and honey to come through. The result is a full bodied, sweet, and malty beer.

On draft at Avenue Pub. Amber in colour with medium carbonation. Somewhat muted aroma of pale and spicy grains, along with a bit of fruit. Somewhat sweetish flavour, but the spicy rye and extra dryness from the honey balances things up a fair bit. Tastes ok, but it’s a bit on the bland side.

Loved this beer. I thought that the honey and lemon taste might be too much but the rye really balances it out. Fantastic.

9/24/11. On tap at Peg’s. Clear amber pour with a small khaki head that fades but laces a lot. Very bready aroma, sourdough, with a spicy kick. Light bready flavor as well, not as spicy, with sweet honey notes as well. Not bad.

Tap. Pours brown with a small head. Nice blend of honey and malt on the nose. The honey gives the beer a slightly sticky mouthfeel. Nice blend of honey and rye on the tongue with a hint of hoppiness as well. Clean finisher. Nice!

Review from notes at Peg’s Cantina on 9/10/11. Draft poured into a pint glass. Appearance: Poured a medium amber color with orange highlights and a 1 finger creamy light tan head. Nice lacing. Smell: Sweet malt with a touch of sweet apricot. Taste: Apricot and sweet malt up front followed by a touch of spicy rye before a light bitter finish. Aftertaste is fairly bitter. The flavor reminds me of a much better version of Magic Hat #9. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied with a decent amount of carbonation. Drinkability: Good drinkability. Goes down easy. Overall: Very good beer overall. I like what Abita did with this one. Definitely worth trying.

16 ounce pint - $5.75 at Taco Mac in Roswell, Georgia.

Appearance: Darkened copper-toned body with a very, very thin white head from a very, very generous, to-the-top pour.

Smell: Lowly sweetish aroma with notes of caramel and cooked honey over the malted rye and stale, dry biscuits over the even fainter hints of Chinese Duck Sauce and dried, bitter herbs.

Taste: Sticky albeit not sticky-sweet caramel over toasted biscuits, plus some noticed honey flavor. The portion of rye provides a nice background spiciness. Slight fruitiness of sourish apricots. Light herbal hop undertone, low bitterness, allowing the rye to do its thing. Dry, lightly peppery finish with that biscuit quality still holding on tight.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.

Overall: A fairly good beer with good showings of honey and rye.

Draft @ Mellow Mushroom. Pours a medium amber with a decent off white head. Smell is a subdued sweetness from the honey and is of the rye, maltiness. The taste is also a bit held back, but you get a decent honey sweetness, some earthy hops and the carmely malt. Medium body with a slight carbonation. Overall this is a very drinkable brew but seems a bit held down to any one flavor, however its a pretty nice brew from a brewery I tend to dismiss.
