The newest Abita brew takes its name and inspiration from the Mardi Gras Indians of New Orleans. Looking for Indians on Mardi Gras Day is a tradition for many New Orleans families. A cultural phenomenon familiar to residents of the Crescent City, the Mardi Gras Indians are not well known to outsiders and Abita is proud to help share their story with the world.

Twelve ounce bottle from Abita variety 12 pack bought at Jeff’s Marathon, tasted on April 3, 2015. Cloudy amber color, pleasant aroma with citrus and tropical fruit dominating, well integrated flavors with prominent tropical fruit character. Hops presence could be bigger but this is still a good beer.

UPDATED: APR 3, 2015 From a 355ml bottle on 3/4/2015. Pours a very dark golden with a small to medium head. The aroma is a balance of caramel malt and fruity hops. Flavour wise, it’s more on the malty side, with carmel and toffee notes prominent, though there’s a bit of citrus fruit sweetness in the background. The bitterness is moderate and lacks the usual grapefruit/resin character typical of US style IPAs. Medium bodied and average carbonation. Okay but mediocre for the style.

Bottle, bb 11/15. Amber with an inch of white head that lasts well. Aroma of bitter oranges, caramel, diesel, pine, some odd notes that are kind of like the meaty end of tropical fruits. Sweet with toffee, some more of those fetid fruit notes, pine, Moderate bitterness struggles to get through the sweetness. Not good.

Got in bottle. Stink of a hop note. More caramel than a flower scent. Also more caramel then hop bitterness. Not as easy drinking as previous Abita beers I’ve had. May be more appealing on tap. Had high hopes but let down in the end.

Bottle at Napoleon’s House (New Orleans). Pours clear orange with thick frothy head and some lacing. Aroma: hops, tropical fruits, pine. Taste is resinous and a bit woody. Mild bitterness. Flat finish. Dry aftertaste. Refreshing. Good IPA, nothing spectacular.

Amber pour, white head. Nose is pine. Bitter. Middle is sweet malt and and a hint of metal. Finish is bitter, and the alcohol shows a little. For me, a little unbalanced.

Darker colored IPA, but very smooth. Had the Southern. Not overly bold flavor but enjoyed it...

12oz into a glass. Pours a trust c orange amber. Head is marvelous. Frontal cream based concoctions, 4cm, white beauty. Lacing is all over. Aroma of orange fields, malty sides, the a hop whiff. Taste: metallic hop gardens, malts galore, amber ambivalence, slight hop makeover, eh, OK. But the fluid hop push is there. Nice hop bitter bite to the end. But could be pushed...,......

Bottle from ABC. Pours an almost reddish brown with a medium white head and some strong lacing with some visible particles as well. Aroma is typical IPA fare - earth, floral, pine, and a nice malt balance. Taste is pretty sweet throughout and short on the finish; the malt comes through more than anything. Pretty dry going down and underwhelming on the whole, but not too bad for what it is. Acquire.
