General_Gao (2509), Iowa City, Iowa, USA Jul 13, 2008 12oz bottle. There was an initial burst of citrus hop aroma after popping the top which diminished soon after opening. Malt (steeping barley and caramel) dominated afterward with the hops in the background. There was also a whiff of pineapple. Poured a hazy dark orange color. The head was thick, foamy, and off white. It retained its height well and left some lace on the glass. There was some minimal sweetness up front which faded quickly and yielded to a moderate to heavy amount of hop bitterness (6-7 out of 10). The finish was dry. Light to medium bodied with toasted bread, subdued steeping barley, a hint of caramel, and perfumy hops. Not bad.
NachlamSie (1356), Tennessee, USA Sep 4, 2008 Bottle courtesy of Hopdog. I passed up on this several times. My expectations are just low. Poured into a snifter, this beer is cloudy with a very well formed head. The aroma is actually quite good. It’s much more American than I was expecting. A sharp, clean citrus note is up front with smooth malts beneath. Wow, this stuff actually tastes pretty darn good. It’s not abundantly hoppy, but a clean, crisp bitterness is imparted on my palate from start to finish. A lingering drying zing is noted. The sweetness is juicy and just enough to provide a nice body. Hints of berries are noted beneath the pine and grapefruit flavors. I think this brew is a tad underrated. I guess it might be sort of light to really excel at the style. If I think of it more as an American pale ale, I really have no complaints. ucusty (1062), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA Aug 31, 2008 Clear amber pour with an off white head. Soapy, floral aroma. Light malt flavor and hop presence Headbanger (975), Aurora, Illinois, USA Aug 31, 2008 12oz bottle(7/21/08)-An amber body with a small head. Has an aroma of grapefruit, hops, and sweetness. The flavor was the same with a soapy taste in the middle and finishes dry and bitter. This medium bodied IPA was not the best but not the worst.
Biddle_Brau (139), Midland Park, New Jersey, USA Aug 26, 2008 Amber with thin off-white head. Malty aroma with slight citrus aroma. Mild hop bitterness balances well with malt. Not a big IPA when comparing to West coast IPAs but decent LiebeBier (744), RIchmond, Virginia, USA Aug 24, 2008 Bottle - I was suprised to see that Abita had an IPA offering. Aroma is of the overly sweet malt variety that I do not prefer in an IPA. A "balanced" beer with overly sweet flavor. Perhaps if they would up the hop aroma and flavor it would temper the sweetness a bit.
