Commercial Description:
The newest Abita brew takes its name and inspiration from the Mardi Gras Indians of New Orleans. Looking for Indians on Mardi Gras Day is a tradition for many New Orleans families. A cultural phenomenon familiar to residents of the Crescent City, the Mardi Gras Indians are not well known to outsiders and Abita is proud to help share their story with the world.

Bottle...very one-dimensional brew, and not a good example of an IPA. A honey-like sweetness predominates with the smell and taste of sour apples. Light head. Alcohol, though 6.5%, is not noticeable. Some bitterness on the finish. I can’t wait to finish this six-pack because I do not want it to take up any more space in the beer fridge.

Pours a lighter amber with mildly frothy head, some lacing. Nose of sticky caramel malts, some piney residue. More pine on the palate, orange juice citrus character, ends somewhat wooden with a very mild bitterness. A decent IPA.

Bottle. Big, sweet, rich caramel malt nose, loads and loads of PNW hops, grapefruit and orange and lychee and sticky pine. Superb hop bouquet! Clear copper body with a soapy beige head. Light body, strongly but not off-puttingly bitter with flashes of sweetness, big sticky caramel with outside pine needles and a touch of resin. Not as good in the end as was expected from the first cap pop, but still a solid, serviceable IPA.

12 oz. twist-top from Sam’s Wines. A rich copper body with a fluffy light tan IPA head. Smell shows hop resins, malt smell that suggests this somehow was roasted darker than it appears. Some kind of cereal in the smell, or unroasted barley. Tastes nice. Malts tend more toward a nut brown ale, which would favor the American Pale Ale more, but no, the hops stay closer to the English iteration. In fact, despite a nice pepper, floral and grassy hop note, with a touch of pine, it still stands back for the beer’s full roast malt. Whatever else, it’s just very nice drinking.

12oz bottle. There was an initial burst of citrus hop aroma after popping the top which diminished soon after opening. Malt (steeping barley and caramel) dominated afterward with the hops in the background. There was also a whiff of pineapple. Poured a hazy dark orange color. The head was thick, foamy, and off white. It retained its height well and left some lace on the glass. There was some minimal sweetness up front which faded quickly and yielded to a moderate to heavy amount of hop bitterness (6-7 out of 10). The finish was dry. Light to medium bodied with toasted bread, subdued steeping barley, a hint of caramel, and perfumy hops. Not bad.
