3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 drowland (3879) - Tallahassee, Florida, USA - APR 8, 2012
4/8/12. 12oz bottle. Clear light amber pour, maybe copper. I would have expected it to be a little darker and more red. Nice big tan/khaki head. Thick, but a little loose. Seems to be sticking around, but doesn’t lace very well. Just a little bit of sipping lines and spotty sheets. A little bit of astrigent alcohol in the aroma. Deep nuttiness with a bit of roasted malt and chocolate. WHat mainly sticks out is big bready nuttiness with a touch of caramel. Roasted nuts and a bit of burnt caramel. The taste is about the same - big nutty, bready malt background. More of an astringent bitterness than the aroma led on. I don’t think it’s from the hops, but from the roasted malts. Nutty, bready, a little bit of chocolate. Maybe a bit of alcohol astringency. It says hopped and dry-hopped with Cascade and Sterling. I’m not getting much hop presence at all. Middle of the road body - not to thick, not to thin. Medium carbonation. Overall, nothing special.

Bottle. Amber pour with a moderate, foamy white head. Aroma is floral hops, citrus fruit, and soft caramel. Taste is citrus, floral hops, melon, peach, sweet malt, soft caramel and light nuttiness. Body is medium with a moderate, bubbly carbonation. Ends with more caramel, citrus notes, more peach, sweet malt and floral hops.

Pours an amber red with a nice off white head. A bit of sticky lacing on the way down. Smell is a bit hoppy. I detect a bit of citrus and floral hops, although nothing terribly overwhelming. Also a bit of bread and a tiny amount of sweetness, although not much. Taste brings forward some bitterness along with some drier malt. Medium mouthfeel and good carbonation. This is not a bad representation of the style and there certainly aren’t any glaring defects, which is one good thing I can say. However, there’s nothing here to really draw me in.

2.5 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 theisti (2441) - Leawood, Kansas, USA - JUL 7, 2010
12 oz bottle purchased as part of an Abita sampler at World Market. Pour is slight hazed orange copper with a large, frothy 4 inch off white head. Aroma is mildly malty, along with a vegetal green pepper aroma. Dull, trending towards off nose. Taste is the nose, though much more focused on the straight forward cereal grain malt. The green pepper vegetal is present towards the back, and dominates the longish finish. Palate is thin to medium bodied, yet still manages to be a touch watery. The carbonation is a bit under what I would expect, and the aforementioned aftertaste detracts.
2.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20 GKillian (525) - Tucson, Arizona, USA - JUL 5, 2010
Pours clear reddish amber, thick creamy off-white head, and foamy lacing. Notes of pine and malt. Taste is hoppier than necessary for this style; this brew would benefit if it were more balanced.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 phaleslu (3530) - Saint Louis, Missouri, USA - MAY 23, 2010
Draft poured in a plastic cup at a bar on Bourbon Street with a surprising amount of taps. Pours a mostly clear reddish copper color with a big off-white head. Aroma of apples, pale malts, spicy hops, citrus, and some tart funky yeast. Flavor follows suit pretty well. Medium-bodied, with soft carbonation and a tart, malty mouthfeel. Really unusual beer, but worth a try.
