COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Abita Purple Haze is a crisp, American style wheat beer with fresh raspberries added during secondary fermentation. Subtle coloration, fruity aroma and tartly sweet taste.

On tap during the annual Boston/Salem/Marble head tour. Sampled at the Sunset grill. I didn’t lnow what to really make of this one. It was ok, the fruit was well hidden but seemed to have no identity of its own.

Bottle. Looks and smells like a pale lager. Aroma is not raspberries, rather is pretty much the same grainy, corn notes typical of macros. Taste is similar plus an addition of artificial raspberry syrup. Very one-sided, boring, unimpressive.

I was willing to try this just because who couldn’t turn down a purple beer? Turns out it isn’t even remotely purple and it tastes like crap. Also, if they added raspberry puree to the brew, I couldn’t taste it.

I sampled this beer on draft at Max’s Taphouse in Baltimore. The beer had a cloudy, straw-gold color with an average-sized white head with short retention and modest cling. It had a strong floral and raspberry aroma with a bit of grassy and grainy tones mixed with wheat and yeast. The taste was a sweet, fruity raspberry mix with some sourness too. It had decent carbonation, was a bit dry and had an average-sized body.

Wheat water. If you did not see the bottle you would think your drinking Dos Equis. Taste just like it with a light touch of rasberries. In fact this would taste better if it had more rasberries in it. Wheat water, blah.

A decent raspbeer that my fiancee enjoys, but I prefer to make my own, which is better.

[2421-20090802] Tap. Nice bread yeast dough and mild fruit aroma. Hazy, light orange body with a medium-lasting creamy white head. Sweet fruity raspberry plum flavour has some doughy yeast grains. Medium body is smooth. Nice texture, fruitiness and overall balance.

12oz screw-top bottle from The Liquor Shop in Tyngsboro, Mass. Pours a hazy amber yellow with a quickly dissipating thin off-white head. Smells grainy with touches of caramel and biscuit, with a fair bit of raspberry. Grainy and sweet, with a touch of citrus, obviously a strong undertone of sweet-tart raspberry. Light in body with moderate carbonation, and fairly quaffable. American wheat and fruit beer are not my favorite styles for sure, but this is a reasonably solid example of both. Worth a try.
