Had this in New Orleans 11/2005, not being one for sweet fruit beers, this wasn’t so bad. Pours a hazey orangeish colour with a very lively raspberry fruit aroma. Lightly carbonated mouthfeel, hints of floral and clove reminiscent aromas. I taste plenty of wheat and raspberries. Decent, but a little too rich for my taste.
2.5 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 thechandler (379) - Charleston, West Virginia, USA - MAY 14, 2008
Pours a cloudy caramel color, with little head. Aroma is barely there. Flavor is light, slighly wheaty. A little raspberry taste, but not much. Good and smooth. Not great, but drinkable.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 kidmartinek (1757) - austin, Texas, USA - MAY 12, 2008
Cream soda colored, 1 inch off-white head. Raspberry cream aroma. Light fizzy raspberry cream and barley malt taste along with clean water. Light fizzy mouthfeel. Smooth finish. Raspberry seed aftertaste. Pretty damn good beer.
1.9 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20 BeerBelcher (972) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - MAY 11, 2008
Compared to quite a few fruit beers, this one is a bit toned down. It was reminiscent to me of 21st Amendmant’s Watermelon Wheat, which is not high praise. Purple Haze is distinctly fruity, although I didn’t know it was raspberry flavored until I read the label. However, because the fruit is not overpowering, it exposes the lack of interestingness in the underlying "host beer." Body of the beer is surprisingly, not purple. Not much head, and some fruitiness in the aroma. Flavor didn’t offer much; not decisively fruity nor wheat-beer like. All in all, a bit of a disappointment.
I would not recommend this beer.
3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 gfolivares (67) - McAllen, Texas, USA - MAY 10, 2008
Pours a hazy orange brown color, disapointingly not purple, with a thin white head. On the nose, aromas of fresh rasberries, citrus, and carot cake. Medium bodied with satisfying mouthfeel. On the palate, suggestions of tart rasberries, cake with fruit jam, and peach puree. Not overwelmingly sweet, and surprisingly refreshing. Try with sweet and sour chinese dish, cherries jubilee, or a salad with peacans and rasberry vinagerette dressing.
2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 dmtroyer (430) - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA - MAY 1, 2008
12oz. Pours hazy golden amber/orange with a smallish white head. Nose is fruity, but I’m not sure I would pinpoint as raspberries. Body is interesting, notes of berries, orange. The raspberries seem to weigh this one down considerably, almost comes across as flat. Needs a bit of refinement, but I think it may be underrated just because it isn’t what one expects. It would be like calling geuze "cherry beer".
3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 lumberjack (178) - Michigan, USA - APR 28, 2008
Bottled...Golden-auburn hue with very little head to speak of. Carbonation is average. Aroma is straight wheat and raspberry. Flavor is initially bitter and tart with the berries dominant from start to finish. Ends more on the sweet side. Overall a very light, crisp, and refreshing warm weather beer that I enjoyed.
