UPDATED: JUL 19, 2011 Bottle. Poured a cloudy pinkish-yellow with a small white fizzy head that was fully diminishing and had no lacing to speak of. The aroma was very weak with notes of bread malts, a doughy yeast and a slight hint of raspberry. It tasted lightly sweet with a mild acidic characteristic from start to finish and had a slight hint of raspberry at the end with the flavor disappearing from the taste buds almost immediately. Mouthfeel was light in body and watery in texture with the carbonation being quite lively. Overall a nice light refreshing brew with a just a bit of raspberry flavor. Great on those hot summer days when you feel like having more than just a few.

I poured a 12oz bottle into a mason jar. It had a best before date of 6/15/14 and cost $2.50 ($0.21 per ounce).

Appearance: Hazy orange color with a slightly pinkish hue (but not purple). Pours to a small, white/magenta soapy head which does not lace or retain very well.

Smell: Typical raspberry beer aroma Ė sweet and fruit, but nothing fake. An underlying lager scent as well.

Taste: Most light-bodied fruit beers tend to be of the general American wheat beer style, but Abitaís Purple Haze is actually a lager, and a light lager at that (it may have been a wheat ale at one time). I donít think this beer is intended to be anything other than what it is: a drinker-friendly fruity beer. While thereís nothing overtly wrong with that approach, it doesnít make for much than simply a drinkable beer.

Fruit beers of this class tend to be rather simple in their approach, and this is a perfect example. Raspberry is, not surprisingly, the dominate flavor. Itís lightly sweet at first and blends with the general wheat/pale malt base, but finishes with a strong tartness. Thatís pretty much all there is here, which makes it rather repetitive since there isnít much in the way of hops or actual lager to concentrate on. However, I like the taste enough to warrant this a positive review. As far as mainstream fruit beers go, you could do a lot worse.

Drinkability: I was actually surprised to see the 4.2% ABV indication on the label, as you do not tend to find craft beers of such light weight so readily available. I was worried the beer was old and wouldnít be flavorful, but my bottle of Abita Purple Haze had plenty of taste. The body didnít feel as light as the numbers indicate, though it definitely does not weigh heavy on my system. Itís crisp and refreshing while in the mouth and would be an ideal session beer for the summer.

Serving: from bottle--purchased at Full Throttle Bottles. Aroma: moderate raspberry. Appearance: average-sized, frothy off-white, initial head with fair lacing and fully diminishing longevity. Murky, light-orange/pink body with many large particles. Taste: lightly sour initial flavor and lightly sour, cardboardy finish with very short duration. Palate: light body, watery texture and lively carbonation. Overall: refreshing, light, unique flavor.

Cloudy looking beer. A fruity aroma but a light fruity flavor. Is a nice beer but not one that I love.

Pours hazy yellow with floaties. Light malt, straw, and raspberry on the nose. Flavor is smooth wheat, fruity, and tart. Light body. Lots of co2. Pretty good. Lady beer

On tap at Dan's. The pour is a very clear, coppery color, with just a pocket of head and no lace to be found. The aroma is really thin. There is a good raspberry presence, but that's it no malty wheat character, nothing else other than raspberry and water. The flavor is equally as thin. There is a soft raspberry on the front and it quickly fades through to nothing. Highly disappointing. The mouth feel is just water, with no carbonation, and a light maybe somewhat fruity quick fading aftertaste. Not very good ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

BBD 01/13/14. Pours a clear light amber with just a touch of purple shading. The bottom of the bottle pour is hazy from pulp. Light head that diminishes in 2 minutes with little lacing. Very light nose of raspberry. Light bodied with some pulp. Normal carbonation level. The weak flavor profile is raspberry, but you have to look for it since there is very little flavor present. The finish has mild effervescence that brings raspberry more forward with a bit of tartness.

12 oz. bottle best by 3/15/14 poured into shaker. Hazy caramel color with small red (presumably raspberry) particles in suspension. A finger of off-white head with short retention and no lacing to speak of. Aromas of caramel, biscuit and fresh raspberries. Taste follows suit with just the right amount of raspberry. I feel that it deserves better than the numbers it receives on here. Sometimes a beer just needs to be refreshing and tasty, and this fits the bill for me.

Enjoyed from the bottle at my neighbors place while watching some hockey. Iíve had this before, and itís a decent brew, but in terms of other fruit beers Iíve had its not very good. I happen to like it from time to time, but I typically wouldnít seek it out.
