COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
History of the Beer Style
Barleywine is a term for a strong ale. There are really no other parameters to the style. Our Barleywine is a mix between the American version and the British version. The difference is that American styles tend to have more hop flavor and aroma while the British style tends to accentuate malt flavor. Ours is robust (9.6% ABV) and accentuates the malt character while still being liberally hopped to give a nice hop flavor and aroma.

The Abita Selection: Barleywine
Abita Barleywine is made with generous amounts of pale, red and caramel malts. These malts give it a deep brown color and intense malt character and flavor. It is hopped in the brewhouse with Apollo, Cascade and Amarillo hops. It is then dry hopped in the aging tank with Cascades. In all, we used about three pounds of hops per barrel. This blends wonderfully with the flavors from the malt to give the beer a very balanced profile. The result is a brownish colored beer that is very robust, malty, hoppy and flavorful.

Food Pairings
Abita Barleywine is very robust and complements a number of dishes quite well. It is excellent with choice cuts of meat such as lamb and pork chops. It is perfect with steaks as well as game meats, such as venison and duck. It is also very good with sweet sausages and can accompany spicy sausages such as Louisiana andouille and boudin.

Pour (Happy Gnome Beer Dinner) amber with a beige head, tastes of fruit, malt, and some caramel, with a some bitterness for a finish, okay barleywine.

UPDATED: DEC 21, 2013 On tap at the Gnome. Very intense malts and hops with a citrus background. Very boozy. A bit funky but very interesting and a decent sipping beer.

Looks like dirty dishwater with a cloudy brownish red color with little head. The aroma is faint citrus, caramel, leather, spices. It smells old but its not as its at a bar with a heavy rotation of taps and I think this arrived yesterday! Flavor is yeasty with some citrus and cardboard. Some brown sugar finish. Easily the worst barleywine I’ve had! Didnt finish 6 ounce sample bad.

Draft. Amber beer with a dark cream head. Caramel aroma. Caramel flavor with light diacytel and light alcohol. Medium-plus bodied. Caramel and light alcohol lingers.

Tap at Blue Nile. Dirty orange to slightly amber pour wih a small soapy head. Nose is sweet and malty. Palate is a bit thin. Taste is malty, sweet cherry, and a bit of hop kick. Not bad.

on tap at the Blue Nile. Pours a nice mahogany, mostly translucent, significant and dense white foam. Pronounced aroma featuring dried cherries, something floral, a bit of barnyard, and sturdy malts. Taste is less complex than the aroma suggested; mostly dried cherry, baked sweet bread malts, and some floral notes. Palate-wise this beer isn’t hefty enough to make it a "great" barleywine, but it stands out in its subtlety. Usually barleywines hit me straight over the head, which I tend to enjoy, but I appreciate Abita trying a different approach. The flavors all work together, but ultimately the novelty of subtlety wears off and I wish this were more beastly and less refined.

On tap. I wear it had a spicy and salty flavor. It is decently sweet. But overall a very nondescript barleywine.

Draft… Mostly clear dirty-orange ale with a small, creamy, white head. The bouquet features butterscotch, honey malt and maybe a touch of cotton candy. Medium to full-bodied with busy carbonation. The flavor leans just a hair toward the bitter side, but is well-balanced overall. Citrusy, rindy bitterness is furnished to offset loads of fruitcake, candied dates and cobbler. Lengthy, medium-bitter finish.

This just didn’t work for me. Everything was there in a way: malts, hops, sweetness, etc. but this was very watered down - just came off too weak. Nose was faint at best. Taste was more like water than Barley Wine.
