COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION HISTORY OF THE BEER STYLE Roggenbier is a German term describing a beer that is made with rye malt. They are usually made with wheat malt as well and they are always ales. Some have characteristics of hefeweizens. Ours is similar in this regard, thus the name “Roggen Weizen”. This beer is made with malted rye, wheat, and barley. It is fermented with a Bavarian wheat yeast so it has the same yeast profile as a German hefeweizen. It is unfiltered and cloudy in appearance. THE ABITA SELECTION Our roggen weizen is a stronger version of a German hefeweizen with rye malt added. The beer contains 20% malted rye as well as malted wheat and barley. The rye gives the beer a distinctive sweet flavor and aroma. We used a Bavarian yeast strain that gives the beer banana and bubble gum-like flavors and aromas. We used German Perle hops in very small amounts so the flavors of the rye, wheat, and yeast predominate. This beer is not filtered and cloudy in appearance, but still very refreshing. FOOD PAIRINGS Our roggen weizen is versatile and can be paired with almost anything. It is very good with most salads and also cheese plates. It is also a perfect match for traditional New Orleans-style brunches. This beer can accompany veal and most seafood dishes.
