2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 Drake (6488) - Ivy, Virginia, USA - SEP 10, 2011
Draft sample at the 2nd Annual Top of the Hops Charlottesville, VA beer festival, 9/10/11. Pours a hazy pink-orange color with a thin head. Poor head retention. Aroma of banana, berries, bread and a phenolic finish. The taste is citrus, berries and a sugary finish. Medium bodied. A bit too sweet.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 ben4321 (2990) - Hoboken, New Jersey, USA - SEP 10, 2011
Location: Draft at Capital Ale, 9/9/11
Aroma: The nose is fairly sweet, raspberries, grains, yeast, and floral hops.
Appearance: Pours a reddish, amber, and slightly purple color with a small head.
Flavor: The taste is rather sweet, lots of raspberry, some light malt, and light bitterness.
Palate: The body is medium, fairly fizzy mouthfeel, and a light booziness.
Overall Impression:
This one is rather similar to the Purple Haze, I don’t mean that in a bad way, but you can see and taste the obvious resemblance. It is definitely a sweeter offering then what I tend to enjoy, but I found the sweetness working pretty well in this one. I like what they did here.
3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 burg326 (2326) - Florida, USA - AUG 8, 2011
On draft at the Brass Tap, looked, and smelt like the original, only difference in this beer is a more boozy flavor.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Cybercat (2451) - Georgia, USA - JUL 22, 2011
Comes out of the tap a barely transparent honey golden with a fine-bubbled eggshell head. Strong, fruity aroma is mainly raspberry and has a malty undertone. Raspberry dominates the malty flavor, which has a yeasty hint. Smooth, edgy, fizzy texture leaves a nice raspberry finish.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 ilovedarkbeer (2000) - Dallas, Texas, USA - JUL 18, 2011
On tap. Pours a hazy yellow orange color with a creamy head. Notes of fresh raspberries, cereal grains, powdered sugar, and tart fruit. Slightly sweet / tart mouthfeel.
2.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20 bleeng (1372) - Houston nowhere near Beersel, Texas, USA - JUL 9, 2011
Growler from Liquor Express Huntsville AL. Color is grapefruit and is very hazy. Small white head. Fruity nose. Taste is very sharp and harsh, with some sweetness and citrusy raspberry flavors. Strong rubbing alcohol kick at the end ruins this somewhat promising beer. Best in small doses for sampling only.
2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 coolpop (1163) - Birmingham, Alabama, USA - JUN 28, 2011
Draft. Pours a pinkish light amber with an off-white head. Aroma is some caramel, bready malt, blueberry, and grapefruit. Flavor was fruity, but to be honest, I got more blueberry than raspberry. Who knows. Some bready malts. Not a whole lot else. Easy drinkin’. Wouldn’t have guessed 8%. Slightly slick and heavy palate.
2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Cavie (3382) - Fort Worth, Texas, USA - JUN 21, 2011
Tap at Gman FW. This beer pours a very hazy (ha!) almost murky brownish orange. More orange than brown I would say, with a small white head that left the bar faster than I did.
Aroma is...wow I wasn’t expecting that. Apparently I didn’t do my homework on this beer as I am trying it before looking up the preceding details. The aroma is crazy raspberries and wheat tones. Grainy but tart raspberry for sure! Definitely wasn’t expecting that!
The flavor is big ole’ fat raspberry tartness. Lots of fruit and a light bitter grain flavor as well. Man looking at the name of the beer I just automatically assumed it was a Trippel but boy was I wrong! All that being said, it’s actually not bad. The raspberries just caught me off guard but if you want something a little more fruity than most then reach for one of these.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 bb (5888) - Alamo, California, USA - JUN 17, 2011
Draft. Amber beer with a slightly pinkish cream colored head. Big raspberry and light yeast aroma. Raspberry and malt flavor with yeast. Medium bodied. Raspberry and malt lingers with yeast.
1.8 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 6/20 otakuden (1616) - Vero Beach, Alabama, USA - JUN 16, 2011
Appearance: dense purplish haze under an off-white bready head. The color is interesting, if not a bit off-putting – pink grapefruit meets raspberry meets blender.
Nose: I had to dig deep to find the nose on this beer. Angel food cake. White bread without the crust. Frozen blueberries and strawberries. Sweetened pink grapefruit in the back. Lemon and berry ice.
Palate: berry juices and angel food cake in the middle. Light, airy, and very bland. Nothing along the edges. Blueberry and strawberry ice while lemon ice nips faintly before disappearing in the swallow. More than halfway through faint berry skin tannic bitterness tries to impress.
Final Thoughts: meh. Boring if I do so and I do. The original Triple Haze from Abita is far better. For a bigger badder brother to the Triple Haze, he falls short on all counts. Forgettable.
