Working with the Louisiana Seafood Promotion & Marketing Board (LSPMB), Abita Beer announced that it has established ‘SOS – A Charitable Fund’ that will assist with the rescue and restoration of the environment, industry and individuals fighting to survive this disastrous oil spill.

The fund has pledged that 100% of all money raised will go to charity. In addition, the Louisiana Seafood Marketing Board will play an important role in advising where the money can do the most good. An advisory committee is being established as the donation process and grant procedures are finalized.

The centerpiece of the fundraising effort is a new charitable beer created by Abita. The brew, called SOS – A Charitable Pilsner, will generate 75¢ for every bottle sold. This Abita Beer is a message in a bottle...a distress signal for the troubled waters of our Gulf Coast. For every bottle sold Abita will donate 75¢ to the rescue and restoration of the environment, industry and individuals fighting to survive this disastrous oil spill. This unfiltered Weizen Pils is made with Pilsner and Wheat malts. It is hopped and dry hopped with Sterling and German Perle hops. It has a brilliant gold color, a sweet malt flavor, and a pleasant bitterness and aroma.

UPDATED: SEP 6, 2010 22 oz. bottle served in shaker- About time I had this since this place has went to hell in a handbasket... poured a transparent darkened yellow with a brown undertone, medium carbonation, one finger white head formed, lasted throughout the serving, and laced very nicely. Aroma of wheat, lemon, and grassy hops. Hits the mouth with an even medium body, malt is enjoyable, grain/slightly undercooked bread in the middle, finish has a slight amount of citrus and dryness. To paraphrase the beerpaygners, geeks, whiners, beer spoiled brats, and hypers here that piss and moan like elementary school children: OH YEAH, do you know what MY BEER CAN DO?!?! YEAH!

Very interesting with a nice wheat sweetness combined with the bitter hops. I think this would go great with some sweet blue crabs or a big pot of shrimp. This has to rank up there with Victory’s Prima Pils.

22 oz Bottle -- Pours a hazy light orange-yellow with a medium white head. Aromas of tangerine, lemongrass, floral hops, and yeast. Mild malt, some sweetness, and a smooth hoppy finish.

Medium yellow, decent head. Pilsener isn’t my favorite style, so I wasn’t expecting much. This one had a slight malt taste with a very nice touch of hops taste and bitterness. Kind of a weak American pale ale all around. I’m not sure what good, fresh pilsener should be like, but if it’s like this, I could become a fan of the category. What’s interesting is I seem to like it more than most.

Poured from a 22oz. bottle int a pint glass. The color is a golden/amber with quite a few bubbles. There is about two fingers of foamy white head and some thick lacing. The smell is noble hops at first in the nose with a pale malt flavor coming out. Has a nice crisp German hop flavor that is also a bit wheaty as well. The taste has some nice sweet malt flavor. The hops come in to hit you up with some earthy flavor and some clove flavor before going way to more malt flavor. The feel of this beer has a nice light body and really has a well managed feel that goes down well bur does not have too much or a disagreeable feel

Cloudy yellow in color. Thick head with decent lacing. Sweet malt taste with a dry finish and some basic hops bitterness. Slight toasty bread aroma. Overall, it’s smooth and easy drinking. Not much else you can ask for.

Clear straw-colored pour with a clean white 2-finger head that left a decent amount of delicate lacing. Aroma is biscuit, citrus, and honey. Flavor is similar with bits of lemongrass showing through. Medium mouthfeel. Great cause but average beer.

Nice call Abita for a charity first off. Pours a pretty pale yellow with an admirable head. Aroma is bread-like and a bit sweet with some grass. Hops are very light, making this a bit sweeter than I like my pils, but a nice easy drinker I’m happy to spend my charity on!

Bottle. Pours with a clear golden body and a white head. Aroma of hay, grain, bread and notable spicy/nearly citrus hops. A little bit of alcohol. Taste is dry, grain and bread with lingering bitterness. Not too much hop flavor just a decent amount of bitterness. Pretty bland but not offensive. Maybe the lightest hint of diacetyl. Somewhat rounded or slick mouthfeel, medium bubbles. Not bad, just bland.
