COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Working with the Louisiana Seafood Promotion & Marketing Board (LSPMB), Abita Beer announced that it has established ‘SOS – A Charitable Fund’ that will assist with the rescue and restoration of the environment, industry and individuals fighting to survive this disastrous oil spill.

The fund has pledged that 100% of all money raised will go to charity. In addition, the Louisiana Seafood Marketing Board will play an important role in advising where the money can do the most good. An advisory committee is being established as the donation process and grant procedures are finalized.

The centerpiece of the fundraising effort is a new charitable beer created by Abita. The brew, called SOS – A Charitable Pilsner, will generate 75˘ for every bottle sold. This Abita Beer is a message in a bottle...a distress signal for the troubled waters of our Gulf Coast. For every bottle sold Abita will donate 75˘ to the rescue and restoration of the environment, industry and individuals fighting to survive this disastrous oil spill. This unfiltered Weizen Pils is made with Pilsner and Wheat malts. It is hopped and dry hopped with Sterling and German Perle hops. It has a brilliant gold color, a sweet malt flavor, and a pleasant bitterness and aroma.

Bottle. Pours with a clear golden body and a white head. Aroma of hay, grain, bread and notable spicy/nearly citrus hops. A little bit of alcohol. Taste is dry, grain and bread with lingering bitterness. Not too much hop flavor just a decent amount of bitterness. Pretty bland but not offensive. Maybe the lightest hint of diacetyl. Somewhat rounded or slick mouthfeel, medium bubbles. Not bad, just bland.

8/27/10. Bomber. Cloudy off-yellow pour with a big thick white head that laces like a mutha... The aroma is plain old corny, metallic light beer, and basically so is the flavor, except sweeter and a more generous wheat hint. Glad for the cause, meh for the beer.

Pours a hazy gold with a moderate white head. Aroma of wheat, hay, pepper, grass, lemon, pine and sourdough bread. Pretty inticing, actually. Flavor follows suit with grass, hay, biscuits, lemon, pepper, leaves and pine. Fairly bitter. Creamy texture from the wheat. Finishes kinda thick feeling with plenty of toasted biscuit and lemon/pine bitterness. Grassy peppery aftertaste. Medium bodied, thicker than typical and far from crisp. Definitely good and interesting. I’d love to have more.

Bottle; clear gold color. Aroma of herbs, flowers, earth, and a medicinal. Flavor of medicine, earth, hops, bread and caramel. A pretty solid beer from them, which was surprising.

Bomber from the Orland Park, IL, Binny’s: It pours a slightly hazy gold body with a frothy, sustained head. The aroma has some bready wheat and a grainy sweetness along with a very light grassiness. Very soft mouthfeel. The flavor has that same bready grainy sweetness offset by a quiet grassy bitterness - perhaps too slight for this to be called a Pilsener. A moderate hoppy bitterness does appear in the fry finish. Okay, and worth the money for the donation given to the Gulf Coast relief effort. Would that more breweries would allow me to be charitable through my drinking...

Bottle. Poured hazy amber color with an average white frothy head that mostly diminished with fair lacing. Moderate malt, hop and yeast aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium sweet flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate duration. Drinkable brew.

bottle pours light gold with a medium white head. Aroma is grassy, notes of hay and spicy hops. Flavor is sweet cereals, pale malts and sharp hot hop notes in the finish. Very clean finish, nice at 3.99 a bottle.

Hazy yellow with a small foamy white head Nose is lemony and malty. Taste is very rich with a nice malt background. Alcohol is present on the aftertaste. Not as astringent as most Abita beers. Foamy, fluffy body. Not bad.

Medium gold, some chill haze, clears a bit as it warms, nice white head remains almost throughout. Aroma is some grain and spritzy floral hops with a hint of citrus. Flavor is a match. Not particularly "clean," probably from the additional wheat, but an enjoyable brew. Venturing pretty far out of the standard "pilsner" range with the wheat and the 7% alcohol.

Pours a light, slightly hazy yellow with a moderate head. It has a mild, slightly estery aroma. The taste is of dry buttermilk biscuits with a hint of hop bite. Not horrible, but not that good either. Great cause though, so I’m happy to help.
