Working with the Louisiana Seafood Promotion & Marketing Board (LSPMB), Abita Beer announced that it has established ‘SOS – A Charitable Fund’ that will assist with the rescue and restoration of the environment, industry and individuals fighting to survive this disastrous oil spill.

The fund has pledged that 100% of all money raised will go to charity. In addition, the Louisiana Seafood Marketing Board will play an important role in advising where the money can do the most good. An advisory committee is being established as the donation process and grant procedures are finalized.

The centerpiece of the fundraising effort is a new charitable beer created by Abita. The brew, called SOS – A Charitable Pilsner, will generate 75˘ for every bottle sold. This Abita Beer is a message in a bottle...a distress signal for the troubled waters of our Gulf Coast. For every bottle sold Abita will donate 75˘ to the rescue and restoration of the environment, industry and individuals fighting to survive this disastrous oil spill. This unfiltered Weizen Pils is made with Pilsner and Wheat malts. It is hopped and dry hopped with Sterling and German Perle hops. It has a brilliant gold color, a sweet malt flavor, and a pleasant bitterness and aroma.

Pilseners are great but not my go to beer, but this one I couldn’t resist. Not only does the money go to a good cause but it’s a great beer as well. The aroma is a little hoppy, sweet, and has a slight malt funk to it. The appearance is a little on the light side, but has a nice shine of gold and orange to it. The taste is a little bitter with hints of hops. A good drink for sure.

One of the better of Abita’s products that I have had. Good malt presence and very little hop bitterness.

Bottle shared by Mora2000. Hazy golden pour with a fluffy head. Aroma is malty and fruity, with some spice. Taste is grassy, with notes of honey and hay. Neutral finish, with the alcohol well hidden.

Mora2000, much love. Smells awful (the beer, not Mora), Tastes better than I expected. Grass and wheat.

Bomber, split 4 ways into sampler glasses. A clear light gold with just a little bit of chill haze and a smallish white head with a little bit of lacing. Nose is grassy, bready, grainy, with a little bit of citrus - a slight citrus zest note as well. Flavor is medium sweet and spicy, with some more citrus tones and medium bitterness. No astringency to speak of. A clean and dry finish. A nice fresh and refreshing pils and definitely one of the best I’ve had from Abita, for that matter. I’d happily drink some more of this. The cause is good, too, although I don’t necessarily see that they’ll end up with a huge amount of money to donate with only 75˘ a bottle.

bottle from midway mart. poured a brilliant yellow with a good lasting white head. aroma was citrus, earthy, grain, and the sweet, sweet smell of a charitable deed. flavor was much the same as the aroma with a little lingering cloying sweetness. body was light with high carbonation. a rather refreshing beer and proud i could do my part in helping the cause. guess i better go buy more.

I have a drinking problem? Fuck you, Peck, you’re a Mormon. Compared to you we ALL have a drinking problem! ..

..A bomber of new brew and chipping in to help the gulf, why wouldn’t i support this brewery which i have always had a soft spot for, its LA man!! .. Appearances can be... deceptive .. . Pours a light hazed light gold watch .. amazing lacing, and decent head .. Osbourne Cox? .. . aroma of light fresh corn, grain, light panel wood, and just a touch of yeast .. . Osbourne Cox? I thought you might be worried... about the security... of your shit. .. A nice brew, not overly complex but a straight shooter that has truly amazing alcohol masking and drinkability, that i was happy to drink and might consider buying again.. recommended for a decent quaff after a hard weekend doing chores.. . Put up a note? "Highly classified shit found: Raw intelligence shit, CIA shit?" Hello, anybody lose their secret CIA shit? I don’t think so! ..

This beer pours a dull yellow with a thin white head. The aromas are lemons, skunk and bread. The mouthfeel is slightly dry with a lively carbonation. this was a decent pilsner. Cheers!

Big bomber pour. Nice, white foamy head. Golden yellow, with a tinge of haze. Piney aroma, slightly soapy, pils malts are very noticeable. Tastes are very well balanced, just a slight sour/bitter wash, maybe a bit of sweet on the finish. Medium body, more carbonation than other pils brews. Finish is a bit slick, but satisfying at the end. Overall, a good brew for this style. I just think I would have liked to see it be a bit more "in your face" style, something that really sticks out. I like that Abita has made the effort to develop a craft brew for a good cause.
