Working with the Louisiana Seafood Promotion & Marketing Board (LSPMB), Abita Beer announced that it has established ‘SOS – A Charitable Fund’ that will assist with the rescue and restoration of the environment, industry and individuals fighting to survive this disastrous oil spill.

The fund has pledged that 100% of all money raised will go to charity. In addition, the Louisiana Seafood Marketing Board will play an important role in advising where the money can do the most good. An advisory committee is being established as the donation process and grant procedures are finalized.

The centerpiece of the fundraising effort is a new charitable beer created by Abita. The brew, called SOS – A Charitable Pilsner, will generate 75˘ for every bottle sold. This Abita Beer is a message in a bottle...a distress signal for the troubled waters of our Gulf Coast. For every bottle sold Abita will donate 75˘ to the rescue and restoration of the environment, industry and individuals fighting to survive this disastrous oil spill. This unfiltered Weizen Pils is made with Pilsner and Wheat malts. It is hopped and dry hopped with Sterling and German Perle hops. It has a brilliant gold color, a sweet malt flavor, and a pleasant bitterness and aroma.

Sampled at SBWF-11 Slightly hazy golden. Fresh and fruity aroma. Bready maltiness with cereal notes. A bit too much alcohol.

Bottle. Poured a hazy pale with a creamy white head that had a thin layer lasting. Aroma of grain and hints of lemon. The flavor found lemon, grass, and light spice. Light to medium body, light bitterness, and an easy session beer.

This is an interesting mix. You can smell the pils malts but with a sweetness. Deep golden color with minimal head because it was on tap. The palate was a little thin, which was fine because I had it with a heavy meal. There was a light hop sharpness and a sweet tinge from the wheat. Still, there was a strong malt presence. I could also sense alcohol with this one. Easy to drink.

Poured from a bomber to a pilsner glass. Appearance: Clear and golden colored. The wheat malts dont really cloud it up. Frothy, tigh bubbled head that stuck around. Head lacing galore! Very good looking pilsner! Aroma: Hoppy but nothing just blow your face off. Very clean smell. Again don't pick up too many wheat malts. Taste: Crisp, clean and refreshing. If someone is looking for something to try to get away from the big three. This would be it. It's very good. At 7% ABV I can't taste it. I'd love to sip this and be out on the beach or a boat somewhere. Aroma: ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

750ml bomber from Woodmans in the Falls. Pours a very clear golden yellow with a bit of a pure white head. Some lacing coating the glass all around. Aroma has light spice, straw, sweet malt - all quite faint. Taste is of sweet fruit, straw, some sourness and a nudge of malt. Finishes fairly quickly. A good cause, a blah brew.

Appearance was clear pale gold with creamy billowy white lasting 3 finger head, lacing throughout. Aromas are sweet pils and slight wheat, then soft hops of spice and lemon. Taste is better with sweet pils, slight wheat upfront, then mild spicey citrus fruit hops, sublte alcohol. Palate was creamy smooth CO2 with meduim body ,then sweet average length hint of dryish yeast beautiful finish. Love Abita H20 and a great cause...

This is an interesting beer because of the balance between sweet malts, and bitter hops. Pours a beautiful gold color, and the best part about this beer is that my drinking can be charitable, helping Louisiana’s waters get clean.

Bomber from Casa De Oro. Muted grainy nose with a hint of yeast. Fairly grassy with a decent hop flavor. Decent malt balance and a fairly clean hoppy finish.
