Working with the Louisiana Seafood Promotion & Marketing Board (LSPMB), Abita Beer announced that it has established ‘SOS – A Charitable Fund’ that will assist with the rescue and restoration of the environment, industry and individuals fighting to survive this disastrous oil spill.

The fund has pledged that 100% of all money raised will go to charity. In addition, the Louisiana Seafood Marketing Board will play an important role in advising where the money can do the most good. An advisory committee is being established as the donation process and grant procedures are finalized.

The centerpiece of the fundraising effort is a new charitable beer created by Abita. The brew, called SOS – A Charitable Pilsner, will generate 75¢ for every bottle sold. This Abita Beer is a message in a bottle...a distress signal for the troubled waters of our Gulf Coast. For every bottle sold Abita will donate 75¢ to the rescue and restoration of the environment, industry and individuals fighting to survive this disastrous oil spill. This unfiltered Weizen Pils is made with Pilsner and Wheat malts. It is hopped and dry hopped with Sterling and German Perle hops. It has a brilliant gold color, a sweet malt flavor, and a pleasant bitterness and aroma.

Golden yellow with a big white foam head. Aroma of yeast and grain. A little grassy herbal hop flavor but it’s faint in this bottle. Nice pils but I doubt I’d buy it again

I really like the idea of this beer from the deScription, I just wish they had picked a different style. It tastes like a cheap lager to me, though it is at the upper end of that distribution. It’s slightly skunky like a lot of lagers, but is milder in everything, making it palatable.

Slightly hazy goldeny orange colour with a white fluffy head, that leaves some lace. Aroma is bready malts, mild grainyness along with soe floral and slight citrusy notes as well. Flavour is bready, but quite sweet malts along with some citrus and floral notes. Ends quite herbal and hoppy. Mild alcohol sweetness as it warms up, but otherwise pleasant imperial pils.

Light hazy gold, large white head, adequate lacing. Aroma is malt, honey citrus. Light bitter and light sweetness. Medium body, spicy grain, light citrus. Flavor is a little bland but the balance of bitter/sweet is OK. Finishes with a little bitter citrus.

There are very few wheat beers that I can get into. This is not one of them. Granted, it’s only partially wheat malt, but it’s enough to throw this off for me. Not bitter enough and with enough of that funky banana hefe taste that I can safely say I don’t care for this. Still, I’m trying to rate on quality more than personal taste. As an Imperial (ish) pilsener, this falls pretty damn flat. Not flavorful, hoppy or bitter enough.

Bomber from Finger Lakes Beverage, served cool in a tulip glass. 28AL12.

App.: Clear deep golden with a nice off-white head. Aroma: Quite sweet, grain/cereal/malt, a little fruity, pleasant herbal, grassy, peppery hops, a touch resinous, nice. Palate: Medium body, restrained effervescence. Flav.: Grain/malt/cereals, a little more hop presence, still herbal, grassy, peppery, a touch floral, clean; dry with some bitterness and a clean, biscuit and grassy hop finish.

A nice beer, that’s for shore.

Aromas of dough, yeast and sweet vanilla malts. Clear yellow color with a medium sized foam. Pleasant wheat, barley, lemon, bread and yeast flavors with a light, bitter hop characteristics on the finish. Somewhat syrupy malt texture with subtle carbonation. Overall, this is a delicious pilsener with mainly bready sweet malts and a slight bittering hop taste. I’d give this a B+ rating.

Clear golden yellow with slighly off white thick foam, lacing to the glass. Smell is bitter, like beer should smell. Taste although is a bit sweet, but a bitter after taste. Drinking this beer is also contributing to saving the shores of Louisiana, I am a now an environmental drinker. (Houston 201205)
