Working with the Louisiana Seafood Promotion & Marketing Board (LSPMB), Abita Beer announced that it has established ‘SOS – A Charitable Fund’ that will assist with the rescue and restoration of the environment, industry and individuals fighting to survive this disastrous oil spill.

The fund has pledged that 100% of all money raised will go to charity. In addition, the Louisiana Seafood Marketing Board will play an important role in advising where the money can do the most good. An advisory committee is being established as the donation process and grant procedures are finalized.

The centerpiece of the fundraising effort is a new charitable beer created by Abita. The brew, called SOS – A Charitable Pilsner, will generate 75¢ for every bottle sold. This Abita Beer is a message in a bottle...a distress signal for the troubled waters of our Gulf Coast. For every bottle sold Abita will donate 75¢ to the rescue and restoration of the environment, industry and individuals fighting to survive this disastrous oil spill. This unfiltered Weizen Pils is made with Pilsner and Wheat malts. It is hopped and dry hopped with Sterling and German Perle hops. It has a brilliant gold color, a sweet malt flavor, and a pleasant bitterness and aroma.

Good beer. Good look. Good cause. This beer has my vote. I hope they continue brewing it for a good long while.

Rated on 02-19-2013 at Abita Brew Pub. The appearance of this draft beer is a small smooth white head, slightly hazy golden body, very little carbonation observed, and a good amount of lacing adorns my glass. The aroma is wheat, malt, light bitter hops, and semi-sweet. The flavor is wheat, light bitter hops, malt, grainy, and the ABV does make an appearance. The mouthfeel is moderate carbonation and this beer is medium bodied. This beer is quaffable with a nice flavor. It is worth trying and a beer I would drink again.

Appearance started out with a sudsy off-white head with almost no lace and a clear amber color later then the head turns to a kind of scum. Aroma is nice with malt wet grain and a little hops. Flavor is malt fruit floral perfume carbonic tang and a little hop. Body is good. Not my favorite pils. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

"An ok pilsner with grassy hops and hay, but like G said, lacking the pleasant crispness and a little sweet leaning. For $4.50, it’s about twice the price per ounce i’d want to pay for something like this, and wouldn’t again."

Appearance: this beer pours with a very large off white head, it takes a while to pour down and ends up pretty dense, the beer is a clear light gold color Aroma: lemon, bread, cream, perhaps wheat, Taste: very lightly roasted malt, light grain, banana, some bitterness towards the end but it’s pretty subdued, Palate: average carbonation, moderate mouthfeel, slight alcohol on the finish Overall: a pretty good pilsner, it’s subdued but that’s to be expected for this style, hides the abv well and goes down easy ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draft at Khyber Pass. Hazy orange amber. White foamy ring. Orangish wheat beer. Fuller than Hoegarden et al. but not dissimilar. Challah toast with marmalade. Orange blossom honey. Drying tannins. Not awful, but not great. Still a great cause.
