Abita Turbodog is a dark brown ale brewed with Willamette hops and a combination of British pale, crystal and chocolate malts. This combination gives Turbodog its rich body and color and a sweet chocolate-toffee like flavor.

UPDATED: JUL 18, 2003 The first impression is of a slightly dark ale but the chocolate malt really adds a great complexity that I really like. It is a lot hoppier that I would expect for a brown ale, I would have pegged it as a pale ale with chocolate malt added for complexity. This is a beer that is great with food.

This is one interesting brew. For me, it seemed to be all about the finish. At first it was empty, then all the flavors just developed in the mouth and throat as you swallowed. If it wasn't for the bland beginning this would get a 5 on taste. The middle gets a malty sweet roasted barley with hints of slight hop and some yeast like unbaked bread. It also had some smokey hazelnut notes. I wanted this beer to taste like that the whole way through. If it would have this would be a whopper of a drinker. Its still very drinkable, a bit on the light side on the body, but I just can't get by that start. The smell is also very interesting, I smell the roasted barley malt easily but has a strange wet dirt like smell. Kind of like a heavy rained out hiking trail. Good color, was a semi blackened red almost clear glowing. I'm a perplexed by this stuff and I just kept drinking it, trying to figure out what the hells the scoop with all its character.

What exactly makes this a brown ale? I thought it was much too hoppy and more of a burgundy in color than any real variant of brown. And too light colored. I expected darker.

Teaches me to buy a bottle of beer called "Turbodog" that didn't have a dog on it at all. maybe they did have a dog on the label but it was smart and turboed out of there because it didn't want to be associated with this burnt choco-coffee smelling water. i'm thinking that they just take water from the Mississippi River and bottle it...hence the color and the watery-ness.

Mostly a watery taste. What kind of beer is this? It is a dark brown color but I only pick up the chocolate-toffe flavorings in the finish.

Pours a dark brown/black with a mild white head that dissipates rather quickly. Pleasant aroma that is of chocolate/coffee. Very little carbonation, almost not enough. Taste is that of a wheat/hickory/coffee/chocolate. Finishes smooth and the taste perseveres through the entire drink. Could use more carbonation though. Like one rater said earlier, it would be nice to know what kinda beer this stuff is. I had no clue what style beer this was gonna be till i opened it. I guess it was a cool surprise, but i dont know. An average beer.

Poured out a very dark brown. Thick, artificial head on it.A lot of very fine bubbles makes this an effervescent brew. Tan colored head that won't die down at all. Aromas mostly absent. Not much to describe in this beer. Some malt notes in the background, but that's it. Slight hops smell to it, but nothing noticeable. Tastes chalky, kind of dry on the palate. Minerally as all get out too. Must be hard water they brew with, because this stuff is like licking a blackboard. Not sweet in the least. Not very hoppy either. I won't be buying this beer again, but one was ok to try.

The aroma is malty with a touch of swamp (really it does...) Mine poured quickly with little head (???). The color is dark reddish brown. The feel is thin and slightly astringent. This beer is quite dry to be so malty, and I like that. The hops are pretty subtle, and the flavor is unusual but a bit one sided. This beer has a long dry back of the tongue finish. Good beer for something different. This bridges the gap between brown ale and porter I think...

This was an interesting beer that pretty much defied description to me. At different points in my glass I would have guessed it was a Brown Ale, a Dunkel, or an Altbier. Points for being different. Pours a dark brown but clear, with a medium thick light beige head. Quick lacing. Aroma of malt, coffee and chocolate. Medium bodied with flavors of coffee, nuts and malt, with a sweet malty aftertaste. A good session beer, and the best from Abita I have tried.

TurboDog seams to be a well balanced and a precision crafted brown ale. Darker than many brown ales, TerboDog sort of seems like a porter brown ale mix. Well roasted malted flavor, with little aftertaste, Little aroma, hints of chocolate, slightly dry finish. Overall, = B
