3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
My first reaction upon pour was "wow!, this looks serious". Pours a dark mahogany with ruby highlights. The monster tan head is very tight, dense, and long lasting, with nice lacing, the cascade upon pour was beautiful. The nose is spicy alcohol and roasted coffee. After the brew breathes though, there is a noticable dropoff to almost nothing but a hint of cereal and yeast. The flavor has a very nice balance. Lightly roasted with a hint of anise in the front, followed by low acidity in the middle and a deep roasted coffee finish. Not sure of style while rating but tastes like a good porter to me. The medium creamy body is soft to lively and finishes clean. I don't normally like browns too much but this one is nice.

Little aroma but what is there is Malty. Great appearance with a big tan head on a deep mahogony beer. Flavor is fairly light but has the flavor of roasted grain primarily. Similar in taste to a light stout. Not overpowering and fairly refreshing. NOt bad

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Woody nose from an odd looking licorice-black, oily brew. Peated malts and anice in the first sip, and turning sort of chocolatey as it warms in the middle. Mouthfeel is oily and flat. Finish goes sour, with strange nutty, woody notes mixed in. Vinegar lingers... what the?

Old wood soaked outside. Tangy and sour flavors. Some rustic smoke flavors buried deep within.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
A very rich, dark, strong brown ale. It pours a deep brown with a tan head that rapidly fades to a tiny ring around the glass. The aroma is that of burnt chocolate and roasted nut. The flavor has a strong coffee tone to it. Very malty.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 1/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20
Very dark brown ale with very little head. Has a nice thick palate and is not as sweet as most brown ales. Has a rich, strong flavor that is bitter like coffee. Overall, This seems to be a decent beer.

I guess I'll go slightly against the grain here. This beer rocks!
Sparkling clear, beautiful deep ruby ale. Large, rocky, mostly lasting tan head.
Spiraling, dripping lacework.
Vineous aroma with notes of milk chocolate, buttermilk and coffee.
The flavor is chocolatey and sweet with lots of toasted malts and whispers of coffee and vanilla. Balanced fairly nicely. A bit astringent.
Full-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel and lively carbonation. Medium-length, chewy, astringent and bitter finish. Damn nice brown ale! World class and underrated!

Not a bad brown ale but nothing special. Toffee, coffee and malt flavor. Finishes malty, dry, and clean.

I haven't had this one for a long time, and I was expecting that my previous experience, from years ago when I liked it, would be dimmed by all the beer I've been tasting lately. However, I still think that it is very good. It does not taste like a brown ale; rather, it tastes like a bock, specifically one of those Italian style double bocks. I enjoy that style a lot, so I enjoyed this beer.
