Soonah (532), Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA Jul 15, 2007 Poured super dark brown with some reddish highlights. The head was pretty much tan and was at least two-fingers tall. Not much lacing. Sweet caramel and crystal malt aroma with some traces of chocolate and nuts. The flavor was sweet but had some depth to it. Sugary crystal malt definitely dominates in this one, but roasted malt, chocolate and cola are also present. As it progressed I got a really weird grape soda flavor thing going on that totally distracted me. The finish lingered and the body was fairly thin.
Pawola22 (133), Kansas City, Missouri, USA Nov 21, 2008 On tap at the flying saucer in KC. Pours a dark brown, ebony color. Two-fingerwidth, creamy, light tan head that remains moderately lacy. Aroma of lightly toasted caramel malts and some toffee. Some chocolate sweetness and a bit of a hop backing. Some berry fruit in there too. Light bodied and slightly watery feel. Taste is a little watered down too. Sweet almond nuttiness with that slightly burnt caramel malt taste. Slightly bitter with a mix of the berries. Finishes drier with a little bit of a lingering aftertaste. Overall, I give it credit because its actually a decent tasting brown ale, but not up to par with the best of them. fonefan (5547), Ulfborg, Denmark Nov 21, 2008 Bottle 12fl.oz.
[ Trade by kpresley77 ]. Clear medium red brown color with a average to large, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, light beige head. Aroma is moderate malty, roasted, bread, caramel, fruity - berry. Flavor is moderate to light light heavy sweet and light to moderate bitter with a average to long duration. Body is medium to light, texture is watery, carbonation is soft. (050908) lithy (385), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Nov 20, 2008 Dark dark brown that looks black, except through the light looks ruby. Two tan fingers of nicely lacing head. Dark creamy malt aroma, nuts and chocolate. Taste is pretty roasty malt for a brown, some caramel and chocolate. scrizzz (537), kirkland, Washington, USA Oct 31, 2008 Malt forward aroma with some off-putting aromas, like spilled stale beer. Dark and thick with a thick dense creamy sandy head. Thinner than expected with some almond and caramel in the malt, but metallic notes too. Meh. Perm (142), Tryon, North Carolina, USA Oct 30, 2008 I do love me some Turbodog, and I have for quite a few years. Only just now getting around to reviewing it.

And, only recently have I discovered a secret: drink it close to room (or at least cellar) temperature -- it comes alive!

Bottle, poured into an oversize wine goblet.

Appearance: Dark, brooding, yet inviting. Crassly put, like Coca-Cola. More elegantly, like a russet madeira.

Aroma: Those dry hops are nice! On the nose, a lot of resin, molasses, pipe tobacco, leather, and wet grass. Shades of a weak barleywine, almost.

Taste: Not as poweful as the nose, but not too far behind. Toasty malt, chocolate, coffee notes, molasses, and an American hop finish.

Palate: A bit of a fizzy zing, but quite a bit of oil as well.

Overall: If they were to ever make a souped-up version of this ale and call it an Old Ale or a Barleywine, I’d be over the moon. Turbodog is great, though. Surprisingly easy-drinking for its heaviness and its strength. Dynamite with a range of foods, too, everything from oven-roasted eggplant to white chocolate challah bread pudding.
