2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
I poured this beer from the bottle, noticing a deep, almost opaque reddish-brown color and a modest beige head that settles to a thin film of foam. The aroma is initially has rich, caramel sweetness, but the wonderful sweetness somehow seemed to evaporate with the head and faded to little more than a dull combination of mild lactose-like sweetness, some musty hops, and an afternote of dry cocoa. The flavor is marginally better but still sadly bland, with a light, sweet blend of milk chocolate and a mildest noticeable toffee character, although each characteristic seems to develop nicely as the beer warms. The texture is good enough, with a nice medium body that is lightened by a fine carbonation. Overall, although certainly drinkable, the superficial flavor profile leaves much to be desired.

Ok, but boring beer. Pours a nice red with a tan head. Smells slightly like champagne. Taste is very lacking, almost like corona with lime, weirdly. Unmemorable. Had on tap at Pear in Napa.

Tap, Yard House, Las Vegas, 01/11/13. Pale brown becoming headless (the beer). Aroma of treacle sweetness, slight burnt sausage skin and shrubby hop. Odd pleasant shrub and honey German lager character over burnt paper, ash and
molasses. The burnt paper is annoying.

Small head dissipates fairly quick. Sweet chewy malty flavor of burnt oatmeal, coffee, caramel. Enough hop flavor to balance it out but not leave any bitter aftertaste. Easy drinking.

Pours out a dark mahogany with a tan head. Strong aroma of toffee. Taste is mostly nuts and darker berries, nice and sweet. VERY flavorful, and it fills the mouth very well. Excellent brew. Thanks, Coach!

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
I had this quite a few times years back when I was in Texas, so when I saw it on the shelf today I just had to grab one. Pours a crystal clear dark brown with bodacious ruby highlights and a huge crop of fluffy tan head. Aromas of chocolate and caramel with a hint of earth and toffee. The flavor is a bit fruity with English yeasty esters dominating. Caramel toffee and chocolate maltiness off set with a hint of earthy hop flavor. Medium body with a moderate to high level of carbonation and a sweet slick creamy bubbly mouthfeel. I was worried that my palette may have changed in all these years, but this is actually a pretty good English style ale.

Excellent appearance with good froth and lacing that lasts. Good balance but I can taste that Pale malt. Chocolate is only a slight note here. Grassy and a little tangy. Not bad.
