COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
To this very day, Germans and some other Central Europeans brew to conform to tax classifications based on gravity and alcohol content. In Germany a century or more ago, Abzug would have fallen into the lower end of the Vollbier classification, and perhaps the higher end of Schankbier. In Austria, its elders would have been Vienna and Marzen. Abzug’s gravity is lower, and its lagering time shorter, but in all respects it remains a tasty, quenching lager.

Malt: U.S. 6-row, Belgian Vienna and flaked rye
Hops: Triple hopped with German Tradition
Yeast: House Lager (San Francisco)
OG: 1.042 or 10.5 degree Plato
ABV: 3.8%
IBU: 26
Color: 3.4 degree Lovibond SRM

A Kellerbier, according to my waiter- it certainly isn’t a Pale Lager. The aroma has nice toasted malts up front with a touch of white grape and butterscotch. Appearance is gold with light white head. Flavor matches the nose, but with a light grassy hop finish. Palate is bubbly. Nice.

Draft. Poured clear golden color with a medium frothy white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate sweet balanced aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium sweet flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate duration. My expectations where met with an above average brew.

Pours yellow gold with a white head. Aroma is light bready malts, a little bit of banana and some earthy hops. Flavor is light malts, with a surprising banana like flavor is well. Nice session brew.

On tap at brewpub
My second pint was another light beer. This was a bit different but still another fabulous session beer with which to while away the hours. If New Albanian can continue to crank out small batches of lighter styles like this they move up even further on my list of respected brewpubs. Hopefully with time they can scale them beyond their two outlets and some limited bars in the Kentucky area.

Aroma / Appearance - Transparent and carbonated this bubbles with life. Citrus, lemon, and wheat form an approachable harmony of light hops that gives it more depth than just watered down alcohol.

Flavor / Palate - The hops are faint but noticeable. Working my way down the pint I picked up wheat bread and little else. The grainy texture makes it a surrogate for water; at just under 4% you could probably consume several of these easily without wearing down the palate. Ultimately I would switch to something with more body but this is a fine starting point.
