3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
0.33 bottle. Brown color with a reddish tinge and a large, white head leaving a good lacing. Aroma of dark malts, dark fruits, metal, and perhaps some vanilla. Taste is also malty, somewhat dry, sweet, and spicy. Light to medium body, slick texture, and soft carbonation. Finish is medium long at most, a little sourer, but also more balanced. Overall not a bad beer but also nothing especially good.

2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
The other ’refter beer’ from tap at the monastery, the follow-up to the original Achel 5. Burgundy-coloured beer with thinnish off-white head; creamy, malty and caramelly with dried fruit notes, gentle herbal hop tone in the finish and somewhat thin body. Genuine and interesting for the simple fact that it is a trappist ale, but not worth driving to the monastery for.

Draught @ Achelse Kluis. Clear autumnal red-brown color, medium sized off-white to beige head that leaves fair lacing. Smell and taste malts, slightly metallic, nuts, a hint of caramel, a hint of dark fruits and it also reminds me of some sort of candy I used to get as a kid, but I have no idea what it was called. Average body, average to medium carbonation.

On tap at the monastery. Pours nice and brown (well, duh) with a decent head. Surprising sour flavour - it reminds me a bit of an Oud Bruin. Would be an excellent session beer; a shame it can’t be had on bottles.
