A pale, strong, fruity, hoppy Trappist ale from one of Belgium’s six official abbey breweries. Achel 8° is hard to find even in Belgium; in the U.S. it’s up there with the rarest of beers. This blond, flavorful beer is a surprisingly refreshing brew at 8% alcohol by volume. It is lightly filtered, but still wholesomely hazy with yeast remaining and refermenting in the bottle.

Bottle, 33 cl. Clear golden body with a foamy white head. Malty aroma with a few hoppy and fruity notes. Medium dry taste with light bitterness. Spicy and slightly yeasty flavours. The alcohol shines through. Light body with prickly carbonation. The finish has a strange taste. I am actually wondering whether this beer has been damaged. Other than that I am not too impressed by this beer, my first from Achel. Aroma and taste are lacking, and the beer is too boozy. Perhaps I should re-visit it at some point to make sure my rating is not based on a damaged sample.

I’m used to heavy trapist beer (westmalle triple, etc) and at the first sip, my thoughts were "wow, it’s a really soft for a trapist". Practically no taste of alcohol, juste the one of the blonde style and some spices on aftertaste. A nice beer maybe not enough known because of the design on the label (seems cheap). Definitely worth a try of you like this genre.
