A pale, strong, fruity, hoppy Trappist ale from one of Belgium’s six official abbey breweries. Achel 8° is hard to find even in Belgium; in the U.S. it’s up there with the rarest of beers. This blond, flavorful beer is a surprisingly refreshing brew at 8% alcohol by volume. It is lightly filtered, but still wholesomely hazy with yeast remaining and refermenting in the bottle.

8%ABV. Blond Belgian Strong Ale. Poured out of the bottle a cloudly blonde. 6ºSRM. Nose has that same sweet alcoholic aroma, that I’ll describe as cold, sugary and light like snorting refrigerated caster sugar. There is a residual whiff of formic acid and wet plaster that seems to be so very common in Belgian ales, especially the tripels. Mouthfeel is carbonated. There are water biscuit and bread dough flavors which suggest some nice wheaty ingredients. There may be some rye in there. Sweet and alcoholic palate that again for local Singaporeans would remind them of "chin chow", which can best be broken down into light, sweet, herbal with a trace of medicinal. No hop presence or only in a very utilitarian or subtle fashion. Reminds me of one of my favorites, the Carmelite Tripel!! Goes on Favorites List!

11.2 iz into trappist glass: Very murky pale golden yellow with about an inch of creamy white foam, ettling quickly into a thin film, leaving some lace. Spicy aroma with some booze and banana, apricot. The flavor is caramel malt, with some syrupy fruit, black pepper, aspirin, medicinal booze. It finishes slightly boozey with toasty bitterness. Creamy mouthfeel, slightly slick and syrupy; full bodied.

Birra belga in puro stile trappista.

Bottle, 33 cl. Clear golden body with a foamy white head. Malty aroma with a few hoppy and fruity notes. Medium dry taste with light bitterness. Spicy and slightly yeasty flavours. The alcohol shines through. Light body with prickly carbonation. The finish has a strange taste. I am actually wondering whether this beer has been damaged. Other than that I am not too impressed by this beer, my first from Achel. Aroma and taste are lacking, and the beer is too boozy. Perhaps I should re-visit it at some point to make sure my rating is not based on a damaged sample.
