A pale, strong, fruity, hoppy Trappist ale from one of Belgium’s six official abbey breweries. Achel 8° is hard to find even in Belgium; in the U.S. it’s up there with the rarest of beers. This blond, flavorful beer is a surprisingly refreshing brew at 8% alcohol by volume. It is lightly filtered, but still wholesomely hazy with yeast remaining and refermenting in the bottle.

Bottle. Pours hazy pale yellow with huge foamy white head. Aroma is malt, spice, yeast, leather, barnyard, flowers, and white sugar. Taste is light bitter and light sweet. Body is watery to light oily with lively carbonation. Finish is a bit short with notes of malt, sugar, spice (cloves, nutmeg, cardamom) and yeast/Vegamite. A bit disappointing.

Bottle. Shiny golden body with a thick white head. Aroma is full of fruitness and spicy yeast esters, subtle honey and malt notes. Yeasty taste, sweet fruits, light grassy. Sweet and spicy finish with a light bitterness. Tickling carbonation.
