csbosox (971), Prairie Village, Kansas, USA Mar 4, 2008 33cl bottle served in a Chimay chalice. Served at basement temps, which appears to be 57°. Monster 3 fingered head grows in the glass, due to the vigorous carbonation. Golden color, excellent clarity. Spicy phenols on the nose as well as soft alcohol, an earthy/musty character, yeast/vanilla, floral notes and fruity esters. Nice aroma. Light pils malt, honey, yeast, and lemony citrus at first followed by a rush of flavors-black pepper, mustiness, fruitcake, clean but prominent alcohol, and and earthiness. Alcohol heat and black pepper lingers into the finish. I recently judged Belgian Blond Ales at a homebrew competition and it made me appreciate this great style even more and this is a fine example.
ucusty (1062), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA Aug 31, 2008 Clear golden with dissipating white head. Sweet Belgian-yeast fruity malty aroma. A bit spicy flavorwise, but relatively light --malty and fruity. Dr_Funk (80), Sorumsand, Norway Aug 29, 2008 Bottle from monopoly outlet, Oslo.
Pours semiclear honeycoloured with large white frothy head.
Huge malty honey aroma, reminds me of the courtyards at scottish whisky distilleries. rather sweet caramel and honey taste like Innis & Gunn. Long and sweetfinish. A great beer, but not my kind of style. TEJA (92), Stockholm, Sweden Aug 17, 2008 Nice golden colour with a half short head. Nice aroma of cramell and barnyards. The flavour is also much sweet of caramell. There is also fruit and spices. Though not nearly as good as the Westvleetern brews it still is a good belgian brew. davidpl (398), Santiago, Chile Aug 15, 2008 Appearance: golden color. Big head with white color, airy and some lasting.
Aroma: spicy hoppy with herbal notes like grass and coriander reminiscences. Citric smells like lemon, pineapples, melon and green apples. Also, the yeast, the banana and bubble-gum. Some slight mints and floral aromas.
Flavor: sweet and ephemeral malty. Fruitiness like oranges and pineapple in syrup, tangerines and papaya marmalade. Floral notes like tea and chamomile; spiciness of aniseed and coriander. The banana and bubble-gum. Light dry-hoppy and enough herbal with grapefruits notes, some astringent and, maybe, menthol hints.
Palate: medium body and medium to high carbonation.
Remark: notably blond, fruity and spicy, with character and balanced sweetness.
gameface23 (91), Haverhill, Massachusetts, USA Aug 9, 2008 Pours a cloudy burnt yellow with a finger sized foamy head that left lacing down the sides of the glass. Smell is yeasty, with nothing else really sticking out. Taste is decent, with warming alcohol that isn’t hidden all that well with a finish that is somehow sweet and medicinal at the same time.
