Clear dark reddish brown with a huge off-white head. Aroma is a little vague with notes of caramel, dried fruit, yeast and spices. Flavor is rather sweet and moderate bitter. Finish is dry and bitter with a little alcohol. Very complex and balanced. The only thing lacking is some more aroma. 030311

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 eyes_wide_shut (101) - Haifa, ISRAEL - FEB 25, 2011
At a tasting, thanks zvikar, bottle, pours nice dark reddish with a nice head that dissipates slowly, cherry aroma, dry, and overall a very good Trappist beer.
4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 bigabe (166) - California, USA - FEB 21, 2011
Pours deep ruby red, slightly cloudy, with a nice, tan, foamy head that lingers throughout. Aroma is mild, some malts, a little yeasty funk, and some dark fruit. Taste is intense and complex. Lots of dark fruit, sweet malts, candi sugar, a little booze, and some christmasy spice notes. Mouthfeel is very lively, and the flavors linger for a long time. An excellent trappist beer. Possibly my favorite trappist bruin.
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 Ernesto987 (1257) - Connecticut, USA - FEB 19, 2011
This was the winner of the blind Trappist tasting, without westy. I feel that this is lighter and friendier to the palate than the dense rochefort 10. Very like dark fruity flavors, fruity nose, complex malty profile. One of my favorites.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Rettep (902) - SWEDEN - FEB 18, 2011
Bottle. Dark brown/red with a large tan head leaving lacing. Aroma: sweet malt, chewing gums, yeast, fruit, hay or dried grass. Taste: malty with dried fruit, raisins, chewing gums, candy, yeast. Full-bodied with soft, large bubbles, moussy.
3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 Mad_Ferret (460) - SWEDEN - FEB 14, 2011
Bottle. Explodes out of the bottle and I have to hurry to pour. A huge dirty light brown white head bilds that after a while starts to fall and looks like foam in a sewer leaving some good looking lacings. The liquid is hazy and deep redish brown.
Aroma is malty, sweet and slight yeasty. Burnt sugar/dark syrup, dark fruits, dark bread, caramell, bitter orange, almond paste, alcohol.
Taste is not as sweet as expected. Malty, a bit burnt, dark fruits, dark syrup, caramell, wood, bitter orange, some toffee.
Body is medium, carbonation tickles, alcohol burns a bit in the throat.
Starts sweet with syrup, ends bitter with orange peel. The nose is great, but the taste is a bit raw. I kind of like that though. Can’t make up my mind about this one.
