4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
330ml brown bottle. Poured deep orange brown, fairly clear. Heady - tan coloured foam, creamy uneven head. Aroma was banana, dark malts. Flavour was full of dark malt, spicy, quick iron like roast note, brown sugar, dark chocolate, fruity and sweet malt (again more banana). Bit of yeast tang in the finish. Finishes a bit dry. Tingly mouthfeel with some warming alcohol. Very solid.

I remember this trappist being introduced onto the market and have enjoyed it many times since, but apparently I hadn’t rated it yet, so I bought a bottle for this occasion and will try to evaluate it like it’s the first time I taste it. Very sticky, cobweb-lacing, moussy, off-white head but (surprisingly) quite some gushing too, even continuing long after I’ve opened the bottle; colour is a warm deep bronze with ruby hue, initially clear with low fizz. Scotch-like aroma of cookie dough, caramel candy, candied figs, hint of iron, liquorice, industrial honey, hazelnut paste, milk chocolate, candied cherries, soapy and floral hops (Saaz?), brown sugar, banana ester, overripe pear, hint of port wine. Sweet onset, candied cherries, banana, raisins and candi syrup, fairly strong carbo for the style even tingling a bit, sourish accent, somewhat oily but full and ’fluffy’ mouthfeel, faint metallic hint, full caramelly and lightly nutty maltiness, spicy yeastiness over all of this and ending in a finish which combines the initial sourishness and prickly carbo with slick malt sweetness, leafy hop bitterishness and a warming, but otherwise very well-hidden presence of alcohol. I have the impression this has not evolved very much since the beginning, contrary to the Blond, which has become a bit more balanced and is now more widely available than this one; the aroma strongly reminds me of the Scotch style, which manifests itself in Belgium mostly in the form of Christmas beers, but without the spices in this case. Certainly decent, but still (after more than 15 years) a bit lacking the personality, profundity and complexity of the older Belgian trappist brands, I’m afraid. I prefer the ’Extra’ version and I cannot but feel that this one has become a bit neglected over the years... I do understand, however, the difficulty of achieving the same refinement as e.g. Rochefort 8 or Westvleteren 8 in a relatively short period of time.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
