Bottle. Brown/deep ruby with big persisting tan head. Light aroma of sweet malt, yeast, dried fruit. Flavour is sweet, caramel, candy sugar, dried fruit, spicy hints. But all well balanced with a moderate carbonation and an adecuate bitterness. Easy to enjoy. Slightly too íperfectí, means a bit artificial.

Currently I am updating my ratebeer with al the beers I drank but was too lazy to rate at the time. I give the scores I gave back than. If I drink the beers again I might re-rate them.

UPDATED: DEC 26, 2014 Very dubbel looking, murky brown color with reddish notes and a great beige foam. Aroma is spicy and floral, with coriander, but also has some dark fruits, plum and overriped banana and apple. Taste follows the aroma, very sweet in all the aspects, with spices and overriped fruits, also some caramel and barely malty presence. Alcohol is well integrated. Slightly tartness on the aftertaste.

Well, I wouldnít kick it out of bed, but itís not one of my favorite Trappistes. Arrived home after a long ride on my bicycle across the Connecticut River to Amherst to buy this, a bottle of La Trappe and a 4 pack of Duvel, only to have the Achel foam over wildly on opening. Cripes, and at these prices! This makes 8 out of the 10 Trappistes sampled, and the La Trappe will make 9, although I havenít had all the various types from each monastery yet. I had the Chimays, Rochefort and Orval on a previous bike tour through Belgium, and the former 2 are still my faves. Darkly fruity, almost woody, a bit of a raisiny flavor. Poured very slowly into a standard Belgian ale glass, this dubbel hides its alcohol content admirably, like moet of the subtle Trappistes.

Pours a deep brown color with a strong alcohol malt aroma. Taste is of hay and caramel with a syrup flavor. A mild sweetness, taste like caramel. The alcohol content is hidden well allowing this beer to be easy drinking.

Reviewed from older notes found on a Biermarkt coaster:) Aroma of caramel and hops. Appearance: Deep amber in colour with 2 finger of white head. Taste: Traditional belgian malt and yeast with a hoppy finish. Light body and oily on the palate. Nice lacing with an excellent head retention.

Bottle. Reddish brown with a layer of creamy head. Aroma is clove, caramel, bubblegum, fruit cake, and raisin, very unique. Taste is clove, bread, followed by light caramel, finish is slight bitter but smooth, carbonation is lively, mouthfeel is medium. Very tasty.

Pours clear amber-brown with one finger of rocky light tan head, excellent retention, moderate lacing. (4/5) Nose is mild dark stone fruit, brown sugar and toffee malt, faint spice. (7/10) Taste is moderate sweet, mild bitter. (7/10) Medium to light body, moderate sustained carbonation, warming finish. (4/5) Pleasantly mild trappist with a fairly light body and an immediate (but not unwelcome) warming. Lots of dark fruit and dark sugar, with just a hint of spice. My only complaint about this one is that, if anything, itís too mild - to the point of being just a touch bland. The nose is fairly muted, and the taste and body are light. Itís impressive that such a high ABV beer can pull off such a mild appearance, sure, but it might have benefited from a bit more authority. (12/20)
