Malty banana bread of incredible quality. Tasted as if some world-class chef slaved over it for a day or so. Luscious vanilla, toasted walnuts and a light molasses swirl. Finished with a bit of orange juice and raisins. Rich, chewy, decadent.

From notes: Pours a hazy dark amber with a nice tan head. Aroma of molasses, banana, yeast and spices. Flavour slightly acidic, with notes of honey sweet. Subtle hop bitter finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPad

Pours your classic dubbel brown. Tan foamy head is a billowing cloud of puffy foam. Well carbonated. Nicely aromatic with loads of rich candied malts, candied sugar and yeast. Taste has a sweet and sour aspect to me. At first sip it’s a nice malty ale rich with candied sugar and fruitcake. It ends on a sour and tart note akin to a Flemish red. Thinner to medium mouthfeel smooth with a semi-dry finish. At the finish is a mild soft alcohol warming. I like the way it starts sweeter and ends on a sour note. Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic It all I can say.

11.2oz bottle in a Trappist glass. Pours brown with a lacy, cream-colored head. Aroma of caramel and chocolate malts, some good spiciness from the yeast, and floral hops. Flavor the same with a good blend of everything. Average texture. A really good beer.

Had this at the Delirium Cafe, Brussels in April 2012. 33 cl bottle. Pours a dark copper colour with a large white foam head. Has a note of Old Peculier in the sweet malty aroma which is long in intensity. Thick creamy mouthfeel and superb lacing. Dark malts give a moist fruit loaf base with sweet black treacle toffee flavours running through. Slight dusty note of earthy hops present in the brief aftertaste but malt dominates throughout. Finish is sweet with soft caramel notes in the mouth. An excellent Belgian Brown Strong Ale and well recommended.

Brown 33cl bottle, best before Apr 2008, drank March 2007. Poured into a Straffe hendrik chalice glass, well almost half was before the foaming head came to the top of my glass. Cloudy redish brown with a huge biege head, which stays for a long time. Yeast and some hop aroma, toffee smell came as the beer warmed up, as did sour apples. Bitter sweet taste, yeasty with a fizzy toffee-ish feel to it. Aftertaste of the bitter sweet yeasty flavour hangs around. The second pour was even more yeasty (the sediment came with the second pour) and cloudier of course. Very drinkable, but a long way from the best Trappist beer I have had.

Scopey (1652) - Croydon, Greater London, ENGLAND - MAY 7, 2012
Bottle at home. It pours clear deep brown with a thick yellow-white head. The nose is sweet dark fruit -date, fig, raisin, caramelised banana, currant, wood, alcohol, spice and caramel. The taste is caramel, brown sugar, currant, raisin, fig, plum, banana, vinous aspect, spice, wood, varnish and lingering alcohol warmth, Medium-full body and moderate carbonation. Well balanced and rather drinkable.
