JoeMcPhee (3899), Jackson Heights, New York, USA Dec 2, 2007 750 ml bottle at the Bier Markt, Toronto. Deep brown beer, thick rocky tan head. Very rich and sweet smelling. Soft dark chocolate wrapped around dried plums, cherries and honey. Lingering fruit and figgy sweetness. Rich and very tasty brew.
bchlala (41), Denmark Nov 1, 2008 I tasted this beer before I got my account with ratebeer, so I can’t really remember all the flavors. lithy (385), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Oct 28, 2008 bottle date 11/2005. Dark brown, murky with a thin off white head that leaves only a lasting cover. Big ugly black floaties settle in the bottom of the goblet. Yeasty clove and spice aroma some caramel maltiness and candi sugar. Then brown sugar and alcohol. Silky but lively on the tongue then a rush of brown sugar, molasses, plums, raisins, honey, caramel and maltiness. Slight figs and oxidation on this bottle, wonderful. trapez (279), Hilleroed, Denmark Oct 27, 2008 Bottle. Dry aroma from malts and raisins. Clear dark redbrown colour with beige head. <a fascinating mixture of dryness and sweetness from ripe fruits. <long aftertaste like portwine. <a unique mixture of simplicity and complexity - whar else from Bendict! BeerBelcher (800), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Oct 23, 2008 Sometimes things that are famous and acclaimed are famous because they deserve to be...and that is the case with this beer. During my Belgium visit, I kept thinking that the best beers of my trip would be diamonds in the rough, things I’d never heard of, and that just wasn’t the case. This one is acclaimed, and deserves to be.
It poured a hazy brown, with an industrial-looking head of uniformly sized bubbles which had excellent staying power. It took me about 20 minutes to drink this beer, and the head stayed whole pretty much the whole time. Aroma was sweet and just slightly sour with some non-descript fruit notes. Taste was excellent; lightly fruity and sour with an excellent dry mouthfeel and very good drinkability.
I was impressed by this beer and would recommend it highly. I bought this bottle at Beer Mania in Brussels. thooper41 (241), USA Oct 14, 2008 33cl bottle: appearance is a dark amber brown with slow fading off white head, aroma kind of fruity has some plum along with some yeasty smells and a hint of alcohol, flavor is kind of sour again some plum and a hint of yeast and way over carbed, i have never had a beer with this much CO2 other than that not bad but was way different that any other belgian strong ale i have had.
