Huge, copper-colored, bottle-conditioned ale, still hot off the presses, Achel Trappist Extra is the latest from the tiny brewery at the St. Benedictus Abbey at Achel, in the Northeast of Belgium. At this year's World Beer Championships in Chicago, the Extra was easily the best of the many Trappist beers tasted, scoring 97 points and an "Exceptional" rating. You will find this a very satisfying beer, with just a little malt sweetness, dried fruit flavors, warm sherry notes, and a brisk balancing backdrop of fresh hop bitterness.

Starts very straightforward quady, feels way too simple. After some time aroma opens up some delicate fruitiness. nice malty background all the way, caramel, dried fruits, plums, dark fruits, light berry note. Bit too high carbo for my liking. Mostly sweetish with some bitterness. Light side quad, yet smooth and quite enjoyable

Weak aroma, very cloudy - like a dirty lake. Bitter but mild taste. Overall, good.

German yeasts, chocolate, anise. Alcohol is well-hidden. Nice beer but not the best trappist.

750 ml bottle
Deep ruby red brown beer. Clear first, hazy with sediment. Big blonde head. Aroma has cream fudge, herbs, earth and chocolate. Flavor has toffee, herbs, licorice and yeast. Palate is quite full and foaming. Finish has quite mild bitterness and heat of alcohol. Aftertaste feels a bit watery. Adding the sediment adds some cherriness. Cannot detect strong Belgian yeast characters, weird. I was expecting more.

Ölföreningens julölsprovning 2014. Flaska från 2012. Smak och doft torkad frukt så som dadlar, russin, plommon, jäst, farinsocker, marsipan, inlagda övermogna päron. Fin sötma, rund och len, fin beska. Mmm!

Stronger version of Achel 8 Bruin, originally marketed as Achel Drie Wijzen, since then more widely available as Achel Extra Bruin in 75 cl bottles. Deep mahogany colour with egg-white, medium, frothy head. Lovely aroma of raisins, brown sugar, brown bread, caramel, apple sauce, cinnamon, gingerbread, port wine, banana; sweet fruity onset, apple and banana, candi sugar touch, soft, full and velvety mouthfeel, sourish accent, yeasty spiciness, caramelly and somewhat chocolatey, rich maltiness, leafy but well balancing hop bitterishness and warming alcohol touch. Breathes the quality stamp of trappist ales, perhaps more so than the other Achels.
