Commercial Description:
Huge, copper-colored, bottle-conditioned ale, still hot off the presses, Achel Trappist Extra is the latest from the tiny brewery at the St. Benedictus Abbey at Achel, in the Northeast of Belgium. At this year's World Beer Championships in Chicago, the Extra was easily the best of the many Trappist beers tasted, scoring 97 points and an "Exceptional" rating. You will find this a very satisfying beer, with just a little malt sweetness, dried fruit flavors, warm sherry notes, and a brisk balancing backdrop of fresh hop bitterness.

Bottle (Best buy 1/2009. Perhaps a bit past it’s prime) Pours a rusty brown/amber- good effervescence with a large bubbly tan head. Very elegant aroma- soft Belgian yeast with some musty phenols- some cocoa, rich yet soft toffee from dark Belgian malts and a touch of dates. Fluffy carbonation covers a slick and warming body. The flavor gives off some cocoa and date sweetness- however, it’s soft and not astringent like some Quads. It does have some warming alcohol (only in the feel, not the flavor) Perhaps some raisin and fig with a gritty dark malt note on the back. Well crafted and a good example, however, it falls short of the top examples of Quads (Rochefort, Westy).

750ml Bottle: Sweet aroma of raisins, dark ripe fruits, slight funk, caramel, candi sugar, malts, and plums. Poured light brown/amber in color with a small, off-white head that lasted throughout. Cloudy. Very sparkling. Full of medium-and large-sized particles throughout. Flavor is heavily sweet. Tastes of malts, caramel, dark ripe fruits, light nuts, plums, raisins, and figs. Medium body. Slightly tingly, lightly sticky texture. Average to lively carbonation. Average to lively texture. Sweet, malty, nutty finish.

POurs a dark amber-brown with a nice thick head & lacing. Fantastic aroma - so pungent and dark, fig, sour cherry. Wow! Perfectly balanced taste - sweet dark caramel, butter-tart, gingerbread. Thick and creamy body - nice and tasty and perfectly carbonated. Love it! Not too bitter, nice and sweet with light spice.

750 ml bottle. Deep brown coloured beer with a lovely thick creamy brown head. Rich malty aroma, lots of plums and prunes as well as a lot of big figgy malts. There is a big clove and cinnamon spiciness in addition to some very faint banana and a bit of apricot as well. Loads of delicious dried fruits and a lightly vineous tartness as well. Flavour is really tasty. Dark toasty malts, some light rum and dried dates along with a bit of tart cherry flavour. Warming really brings out a lot of great characteristics in this brew. Rich chocolate, cocoa, earthiness and tobacco in addition to all of the dried fruitiness that was mentioned above. Somewhat unusually, it seems to get less sweet as it warms up. Lightly carbonic aroma... a bit of spiciness and a touch of earthiness. Rich and complex but also quite balanced and approachable. This is a pretty damn solid brew.
