COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Huge, copper-colored, bottle-conditioned ale, still hot off the presses, Achel Trappist Extra is the latest from the tiny brewery at the St. Benedictus Abbey at Achel, in the Northeast of Belgium. At this year's World Beer Championships in Chicago, the Extra was easily the best of the many Trappist beers tasted, scoring 97 points and an "Exceptional" rating. You will find this a very satisfying beer, with just a little malt sweetness, dried fruit flavors, warm sherry notes, and a brisk balancing backdrop of fresh hop bitterness.

750ml cork finished bottle. Wow, the absolute definintion of seamless. This beer moves gracefullly between elements of toffee, raisins, slight cigar box, and ends with a light vanilla kiss. All this without a hint at the alcohol content. Just amazing. I haven’t had Westy yet but it’s hard to imagine a beer better than this. I would love to see a bottle with a few years of age on it.

February 20, 2014. 75cl bottle at beerbistro. Chocolate, toffee, plums, raisins in aroma. White head dissipated leaving a thin white film of bubbles. Lovely warm dark brown colour. Lots of depth to this beer. Goes exceptionally well with steak.

Fantastic brew....dried fruit notes in aroma and slight vinous note that really added. The flavor is slightly sweet and raisin, prune. This added to the wine and malt notes made this an A++++ brew

UPDATED: DEC 4, 2007 Wow, this is a great selection. Came in a 75cl bottle, which was very nice. This is a beer that gets better with age, I don’t know how old mine was but I found it in a box tucked way in the back of my favorite beer retailer, they guy at the counter had never seen it before. That was interesting. Poured a burnt umber color, with thin head that stuck around for a while. Immediate alcohol smell, but did not taste like alcohol. Very well crafted beer. Fantastic!!

UPDATED: AUG 8, 2007 Bottle...Simply put, this is the perfect beer. It has everything I ever wanted in a beer. Aroma, color, and, of course, a bitter taste with just the right amount of malty sweetness. PERFECT!!!

750ml bottle at BarVolo. Don’t think my server noticed but the bottle was expired. Definitely not complaining! Well aged... pours copper brown with a very thin beige head with mild lacing. Aroma is extremely malty, with some yeast caramel fruit and minimal hops. Flavour is sweet with notes of dark fruit and malts. Overall Exceptional.

I didn’t have high expectations for this beer. A generic label on a generic 750ml bottle, not the one pictured on this page, seemed amateurish and uninspired. It even has a lame hexagonal shield that says "Authentic Trappist Product." Could not be more boring. But it does say Achel Bruin Beer Extra, so I guess this is it. And it cost $12.95! As you can see by my score, this is an excellent, though unassuming beer. Dark and full-flavored without being overpowering. It is mellow and rich. Only Ommegang’s Three Philosophers is better in my opinion. The after taste is complex and lingers. very satisfying. The head effect matches the taste, smooth, unassuming, tranquil but not sleepy.

Pours like my cowboy coffee with a tall head that lingers. It gently simmers down to a fluffy ring and a clump that lay stubborn like a dead muledeer. Smells of dried stonefruit, dusty granite boulders, and bakers cocoa. Medium nectar weight and light on the tongue with gentle yet ample effers, almost oily in texture. Excellent aroma to flavor follow through adding that the bitter cocoa is prominent. Throw in some roasted coffee bean, a twist of citric acid and a defined bitterness on the finish. The acidity keeps me thirsty and the high octane keeps me warm on the trail.
