Ungstrup (10824), Frederiksberg, Denmark Oct 4, 2003 [Bottled, labelled Achel Extra] The aroma is very sweet with notes of dried berries and yeast. The color is brown an it has an off white head. The flavor is very sweet (no wonder considering the 9.5% ABV) and complex with notes of black currants, yeast, plums, and raisins. A really good flavor. The best Achel I've had - too bad it is so hard to come by. omhper (10140), Stockholm, Sweden Sep 20, 2003 Bottled, labelled Achel Extra. Orange brown with coarse, livley head. Sweet sugary aroma. Medium bodied with notes of chocolate, toffee, roasty licorice and vodka. Very powerful, but still a bit raw, and some time to mature will make it better. Papsoe (9663), Frederiksberg, Denmark May 27, 2005 Updated: Jun 10, 2005(Bottle 75 cl) It’s years between new Trappist beers. I believe the last one before this was the green one from Westvleteren 4-5 years back. But Achel launched this top product and it’s a dark, heavy ale - very typical trappist. Really dark, roasted malt sweetness. Bitterness and sweetness struggling with and against eachother. Nice news but not really outstanding. 140604 Oakes (6784), Miami Beach, Florida, USA Feb 1, 2004 Dark brown, muddy. Aroma is malty, alcoholic, slightly caramelly. Toasty palate, fairly yeasty as well. Raisin bread, lots of alcohol and a full maltiness. Plays the style in a by-the-numbers kind of way, not venturing from the script and ultimately that is its undoing. Competent Abt, but lacking inspiration. I'll revisit the issue in a couple of batches. joergen (6141), Frederiksberg, Denmark Dec 30, 2005 Bottle.
